I start mine in late November. Some seeds need longer exposure to cold than others. I live in zone 4/5.
Trudi (Davidoff) has some great web pages on practice. She likes to start around the first of the year and is a Long Island gardener (about your zone). I have to confess not being a winter sower. My tomatoes will ever start indoors under lights. Oh me, of little faith
Hi, I'm new. I'm in zone 6, and I'll be starting my hardy perennials towards the end of January. I'm worried that the weather will be too erratic before then! This will be my first year trying Winter sowing.
Seranae, Welcome to the forum! We are in Texas now, but we lived in upstate NY zone 5/6 for many years. Some perennials I just let self-sow in the fall (Missouri primrose, Lady's Mantle are two I can remember) and others I started indoors to transplant out as seedlings in June. Throwing lettuce seed on the last snow (or best guess as what snow was last--I remember the Mother's Day blizzard one year!)worked wonders for an early and prolific lettuce crop. Let us know how your winter sowing does. Here in Texas winter sowing is known as the "spring garden!"
