Well today is a very historic day in Ireland,..we have Queen Elizabeth visiting Dublin,..the first British Monarch to do so in 100 years.

In a few days we will be visited by President Obama,..he is coming to visit the place his Great,.. Great,.. Grandfather,..(Kearney Family),.. came from,..just down the road from where i live,..Moneygall,County Offaly,..his Ancestor left Ireland in 1890 and headed off to America,..while all this may be true,..i don't see any resemblance in him to people in County Offaly  .

Both Queen Elizabeth and President Obama will be escorted while they are here by The Presidential Escort,..The 2nd Cavalry Regiment,..my old regiment,..below are some pictures taken some 48 years ago when we escorted President John,F,Kennedy,..i was just 18 years old then.

After experiencing the Irish welcome and hospitality, I just hope our President will come back home!
Wonderful photos. You must be very proud of your regiment.

Lovely photos! What an experience it must have been, guarding the US President. :D I like history.

May 17th is the Norwegian national day, our Constitution Day, and is thoroughly celebrated. I've got an entry in my blog, hang on a second...

May 17th Parade just in case you want to take a look.

Hey Philip after seeing a photograph with you, Hudson and Molly I can't believe you're (by my calculations) 66!! I thought you were much younger than that and I'm really not trying to just flatter you.

Anyway, aside from that, I really enjoyed seeing your photographs. Can I ask you what make of motorcycle you were riding? My father was a despatch rider and had an Royal Enfield Ensign.

    Carolyn,
i am curious to see will it be proved!,..he is not coming on a State visit,..solely to visit his relatives.

    Cheryl,
cool indeed to have them still,..i lost a big photo album which started in 1945 up to when i lost it in 1991,..all down to my globe trotting.

    Jane,
oh i imagine the laid back way of life we have here would be too much for him,..besides he seems to be doing better than some previous ones.

    Droopy,
thank you for the link,..lovely outfits,..embroidery and accessories,..i enjoyed that trip.

    Eileen,
lol,..you thought i was younger,..tee hee!,..yep i am 66 years of age,..its my baby face that fools everyone,..lol,..and i keep fit,..still fishing, shooting, boating and swimming, not forgetting the garden!,globe trotting as well but i am putting a stop to the latter.

Oh about the Motorcycles,..we trained on BSA 500's,..and finished up with Triumph 500's,..but these days they have Kawasaki Motorcycles,..we did dispatch riding of course,..your Dad would be interested in that,..he being an Ex Royal Enfield Ensign,..plus we competed in Motorcycle Trials on the BSA 500's,..our Regiment was originally the British Blue Hussars,..they had horses like we did way back,..these days we use Armoured Vehicles,..warm to be in,.. when in the Congo and Cyprus,..Lebanon and that area.

    Your 66 year old,lol.

Phillip... will you be riding in the escort again?
I mean... that is if they let someone so "old" still participate! ;)
All joking aside... what a great thing to have been a part of.

Hey Philip. You work for some newspaper or something?
    Nice story + pix.

Droopy... how do people up there celebrate such days?
We Romanians love to do our local BBQs... All the smoke and smells... yuck!

Too bad our National Day is December 1st. COLD. not doing much on that day. Just stay home and watch TV.

I wish they chose a different, warmer DAY!

Lol,..someone so old!!,..i am not just making this up,..every Thursday i head off to the Hardware Store,..they give a great discount to old people like me :-D :p ,..and each week i am served by a new member of staff or one who does not remember me,..i always have to ask for my discount,..most say,.."you don't look your age! :D :D .

I had an American lady friend,..one night she said you don't look your age!,..i replied,..what age do i come across as?,..age 9 she replied?.

    Kay,
so far the Queen is enjoying the hospitality and the pomp,..only a small amount of objectors i must add.

    AAnightowl,
time will tell if this family connection is genuine.

    Calin,
no,..not working for some newspaper,lol,..just like updating,..here are some pictures of the present Presidential Escort,..i think led by a woman Officer!. http://www.flickr.com/photos/dfmagazine ... /lightbox/

I think I much prefer the BSAs & Triumphs than whatever those new motorcycles are. They just don't have any "character".

    Cheryl,
i certainly agree with you,..it was easy to work on either a Triumph or BSA,..i noticed the guys in the Presidential Escort starting up the bikes today,..electric start button,..we used to only have kick start,..and sometimes it would kick back, :D ,..the BSA was made of heavy metal,..you could hardly dent it.

I used to ride a Harley... good ol' 73 Sportster. Talk about a bike that would "kick back"! I finally broke down and installed an electric start... but kept the kick start installed. Never knew when you were going to need it!
I had friends that rode Triumphs. They were pretty cool too.... them and Nortons.
