I ran across this at the edge of the garden today. I have never seen it before. It has small white flowers individually up the stem that grow straight out from the stem at each leaf axis. It then goes to seed and it looks like a small disk or button for a seed pod. The stem is smooth and round .
    Anyone have an idea?

carolyn this is a tricky one. I have done several web search's and have found nothing like your plant in the pictures. Hopefully it is nothing invasive. :stew1:

Thanks Tooty, I haven't been able to find anything. either. I did see a new one today, though. It's not nearly as NASTY as that mile a minute weed. :( Now that is AWFUL!!! the stem is smooth on this plant. maybe I will have to ask around and see if i can find anyone in the area to know what it is. we have a couple of organic farmers at church, maybe one of them is up on their weed ID.

Carolyn it will be interesting to find out if they can ID your strange looking plant. I had thought also that it could be the Mile a minute plant. But like you said, yours has a smooth stem and the flowers where different. Keep us posted. :stew1:

Well I've tried searching through all my books for both wild and cultivated plants that look like yours but with no luck whatsoever. :( I hope someone can ID it for you at church. Please let us know if anyone comes up with a name for it.

Thanks Eileen. I am equally stumped. But will let you know if I find an ID.

I've also checked online and in books and can't find anything looking like it. Might it by any chance be a tree sapling do you think?

Hi Droopy, I don't think it is a sapling. the stem was very turgid. It snapped when I pulled on it. it was a little tougher than purslane, but similar in quality.
