I bought some rhubarb roots last summer but the temps were just too hot to take a chance so I returned them to the store. This year I found some at Tractor Supply in late January, all three had some green showing so I stuck them in the ground a week or so ago when I finally found a place that would accommodate three large plants. I now have a leaf above ground!!!. Rhubarb leaf ( photo / image / picture from toni's Garden ) Found this at our favorite thrift store yesterday for $1.00. The bottom is supposed to open, or at least it would if previous owner hadn't spray painted the whole thing and the everything stuck together. I am going to use a knife to see if I can unstick it so I can put a plant in it. Birdcage to become plant holder ( photo / image / picture from toni's Garden )
I hope you can prise the birdcage apart without damaging it Toni as it would really look good with a plant growing in, and, through it. My rhubarb is just slightly ahead of yours but that's because I planted it last autumn. Let's keep our fingers crossed that we both get a good crop from our plants when they mature.
Toni I to hope your rhubarb will grow for you. I had quite the time these past 2 yrs getting mine to establish itself. I hate it when I drive by yard that have rhubarb growing several feet high. That is a very cute bird cage. I would probably put silk flowers in it so it wouldn't get any water damage.
