At this time of the year, Karachi city starts to sizzle, as temperatures shoot up to the high 30s and low 40s Centigrade (that's between 95 to 105 Fahrenheit)... However, a few plants and trees that actually love this kind of heat - Are thriving at this time! For example, Royal Poinciana (locally known as Gulmohar), and the Golden Shower Tree (locally known as Amaltas). So my ares these days is exploding with the color combination of red and gold - A colo combination which the Chinese actually consider very lucky, specially when it comes to attracting wealth, (as well as romance)! Therefore these pictures (from my area), I now share with all of you here, so you too can enjoy these colors! The Buganvilias over here by the way are also putting on a great display, as they too are not so easy to upstage! Anyway, hope you guys enjoyed these pictures from my part of the world!
These days people traveling to Karachi can actually see these colors from the air, as the aircraft (at low level) make their final approaches on the airport runways. However, lucky are those who's aircraft have to stay up there for a little longer in a holding pattern (circling over the whole city)...
Gorgeous colors, thanks for the pick-me-up. Three of the colors I love seeing in the garden, red, yellow and gold. We have those temperatures too usually starting in late May but our plant colors are usually brown, burnt umber and black not long after that.
Thanks Philip! However none of this is natural... As Karachi is actually a coastal semi desert - So all these plants and trees are actually imported from elsewhere in the country. It took many years of exhaustive trial and error until we got the mix just right. Because it's not easy to find heat loving plants and trees that look good too. Besides the soil over here is also very poor in nutrients, and abundant in salt too. In fact, if you dig anywhere in Karachi below 10 to 15 feet, then sea water comes. So in some areas even the soil had to be imported, (believe it or not)... So all of this greenery that everyone can now see in Karachi, is largely the result of this man's hard work! http://www.gardenstew.com/threads/horticulturist-mr-a-k-khan-passes-away.36219/ Otherwise, the actual condition of our climate in Summer season (which lasts for 9 to 10 months), is so extreme - That the authorities have to put up such billboards on all major roads...
Wow S-H they are amazing looking trees. The colours just.....well u know! I like the story too of trying the different plants from other locales and finding the ones that work/survive. These guys go really good there eh!
Beautiful trees and vine! The color really POPS out at you! Thanks for showing the colors in your area.
