For northern hemisphere gardeners the most uncomfortable time of the year is already here or rapidly approaching. Flowers are non-existent, leaves have vanished and the cold is non-inviting to garden lovelies. I feel we need a special place to vent together, reminisce about the gardening year gone by and just have fun to forget about the gardening time that is. I am also crying over the the weather forecast for my area. Giving up to 30 cm of snow for tonight and tomorrow. Hoping,fingers crossed and praying it turns to rain. It's much too early for snow!!
Everything is still in full bloom down here, last nights cool snap took nothing out. Soooooo any and all photos of the 'terrible winter weather' happening in gardens elsewhere would be greatly appreciated by me. Snow, sleet, leaf-less trees, rain (I have almost forgotten what rain looks like) Keep 'em coming!!! And trust me, you really don't want me to start venting about the weather down here.

And the bone chilling wind dies down. Maybe I can just wave to them at the window or use semaphores. It’s cold, the thermometer just barely crawled out of the 30’s this morning. It now sits at 42°F( + 5.5°C for all of you with the weird thermometers) Aren’t you glad Lord Kelvin did not have his way, it would be 278.706°K. IT’S HAPPENING… the cold stuff… Northern Hemisphereitis. Maybe I can surround myself with houseplants and hold my cultivator to the sky….I can’t do that either, my cultivator is in the tool shed….. across the cold, wet, raw, rainy wind swept yard. Tomorrow we set the clocks back an hour. Then it will be a dark, cold, wet, raw, rainy wind swept yard with flowers that did not get the memo. Maybe we can dream of seed catalogs….I started the snowblower yesterday, I thought I heard a flower scream as it roared and bellowed oily blue smoke. We are doomed. On the brighter side: I did not post many flower pictures this summer, I can judiciously dispense then as it gets darker. If I can find my computer in the dark cold, rainy, windy……. Jerry
We've already had a couple of really hard frost which saw off the last of my flowers. On Thursday we had 10cms of rain and the roads and fields were all flooded. Now we have gales and even more rain. The daylight hours are more like dusk and I already feel as though I should be going into hibernation until spring. I doubt we'll be seeing much sunshine until maybe February. :'(
We went to our 1st Saturday mini-market (swap meet) today. It was just about 35 degs on our thermometer. It didn't get very warm and it was windy. I was cold all day and I was wearing a coat and gloves and covering my legs with a lap robe. But, starting tomorrow it will be back in the 70's and sunny. I can stand for that happening. I'm going to make chicken noodle soup for supper. Do you think I should haul out the heater. Maybe I'll just turn on the oven and make biscuits or muffins. dooley
It was in the mid 40s overnight here... and only warmed up the mid 60s. Same for tonight, but a little warmer tomorrow. Not a cloud in the sky, so the sun made it feel comfortably warm. Then we're due for some rain mid-week and back to temps in the 80s. Plenty of blooms here still. I did turn on the heater awhile ago just to make sure it works before winter really gets here. So... no complaints from me.... yet.
Well, our first storm provided us with rain, hail and snow. With the rain and hail the snow only amounted to a couple of inches. It is still below freezing this morning. A little farther west of me got 40 cm of snow. I have never heard of that much snow this early. Just hoping we don't have a repeat of last winter!
We had our first frost yesterday. And I wish I could hibernate for the next 4 months. Calling for 60* today. Guess I'll plant my garlic today and give the gnomes a bath. Maybe I'll build a couple of mason bee houses. Going to be a lot of rambling this winter.
Just cold here...it was 26 this morning...I am late in getting all of my plants cut down because I do not really want to be outdoors any longer than I have to in the cooler weather. We have had snow but it has melted so hopefully before we our bitter cold weather sets in we get a blanket of snow for my plants. I am already dreaming of beautiful flowers and smelling my lilac bushes next spring...and I can't forget about seeing my beautiful orioles and hummingbirds again. I can't wait for spring!

I think there's great beauty in nature at every time of year, it's just that at the moment we have less influence over it, which can be frustrating. If looking at your garden is getting you down, turn your attention elsewhere, to the stark beauty of frosts, icicles and fallen leaves, and of course take solace in the fact that all will be back on track in just a few short months time.
