The Olive Ridley sea turtle, once thriving in my locality, but recently thought to have been extinct on my coast (as a result of coastal development and overfishing) - Has now just made a comeback! Thanks guys! I knew you all would love to hear something like this - I myself am specially sensitive when it comes to the sea (as this is where I've grown up)... So naturally, I frown whenever something bad happens to my coastal ecosystem - And smile whenever something good like this happens! Therefore the party is on! Anyone who's near my location is welcome to join me in these celebrations!
Well what do you know?! On the 14th of this month I read that news above, and so decided to share it with everyone over here! And now, just 4 days later - Here is this interesting bit of information! Yup, now even the giant Leatherback turtles seem to have developed a liking for our coastline! Just read this news: http://tribune.com.pk/story/536967/leat ... at-gwadar/ Leatherback turtle spotted for the first time in PK ( photo / image / picture from S-H's Garden )
And in line of what I had posted before - Here is another bit of good news! This time it's a Hawksbill sea turtle that's been found in our waters! http://tribune.com.pk/story/660121/enda ... to-arrive/ No doubt a great sign that turtles are fighting back, refusing to go extinct!
It's so good to know that these turtles are reintroducing themselves along your coastline. Now maybe we humans will take heed and try to help them along instead of causing their numbers to fall.
I hope you are right Eileen. There have been many environmentally friendly programs launched here. Many free classes held for the local inhabitants too (to teach them how to care for their environment). So it is fair to say that we now take more care of our environment then ever before. And if this trend continues, then the situation will only improve! However, this isn't a national issue, but a global one. Yes, we now may be doing something right - Which is why all these sea turtles have decided to return. But our neighboring nations are not making any effort in this area. And since sea turtles don't recognize any borders - They often get killed by untrained fishermen of those nations. So we really now need some sort of a global initiative. Where people can just forget about their national ego, and sit together for the sake of our environment.
I second that S-H. Turtles aren't the only sea species threatened, and though I love them a lot more than sharks I still think we ought to do our best to preserve all species.
Reviving this thread again, as I have some more good news to share! As since my first post, the now trained fishermen have rescued/released many endangered and non-targeted marine species. Which include: 15 whale sharks, three manta rays, two sunfish, one Longman’s beaked whale and hundreds of olive Ridley and green turtles! However, what's even more amazing is that now we've also sighted a very rare polka-dot ribbon fish also! See this article: http://www.dawn.com/news/1173549/polka-dot-ribbon-fish-caught-released
