We here have a branch of the military called the ISPR (Inter Services Public Relations) - So when it comes to any PR work which deals with the Military (be it Army, Navy, or the Air Force), ISPR always handles it... Basically, they try to put a human face on anything about the military (and sometimes also handle recruitment). However in their spare time, they also make very entertaining documentaries. Which are often aired on national TV channels, as well as shown in schools too. So here I would now like to share one such documentary about the Tarbela Dam of Pakistan. Constructed in the 70s, it now provides water for irrigation, as well as power to the national grid! Production coordinator: Captain Sadia Saleem (PAK Army). Executive producer: Leftenant Colonel Mujtata Tirmizi (PAK Army). Tarbela Dam (part 1 of 2): Tarbela Dam (part 2 of 2): And here is a bonus video of the Tarbela Dam spillway up close. Water flowing over your head, with gigawatts of energy in it! I too have been there, but was an infant at the time, so no longer remember much of it today. Which is why I was searching the net for any pictures - But found this wonderful documentary instead! So hope you guys enjoy it!
Yup, it was a major achievement at the time, and all made possible by our Italian friends - Kicking off a deep friendship between the 2 countries which lasts till this day! We however have another just as large Dam on the other side of Pakistan too (in Kashmir). And that one is called Mangla Dam - Which was built by American assistance and know-how. It is a little known fact, but together these 2 Dams (Tarbela and Mangla combined) hold so much water - That when they came in existence, the Axis of the Earth shifted a little (by a very tiny margin). All because of so much displacement of water. Really, the lakes created by them are so large - That they even show tides... Here by the way is another documentary of the Mangla Dam. Although this one is an old film which was converted to digital format and then uploaded (which is why the colors are a bit off). But as a historic documentary, it is still very interesting to watch! Mangla Dam (46 minutes long). Before China built the 3 Gorges Dam - Tarbela and Mangla were the largest Dams in the world! We however have about 3 more projects planned for the future - Which will be just as big. However they may come into existence by 2025 or 2030. Best of all, not only do these Dams give water for agriculture - But also provide renewable, clean, and cheap electricity to the country. So because of these Dams, our agricultural output jumped about 11 times it's previous rate of production! Power to the industry also kicked off such a swift and deep social change within the he country (leading to modernization in every aspect) - That younger generation even started to doubt their own history books, as they simply could not comprehend that Pakistan at one time in the distant past was even used to be short of food... However today (thanks to these 2 giant Dams) we now grow so much that we actually feed the entire Middle East too!
Fantastic videos,..what a dam,..while the dam was very impressive it was also great to see those sights in the first video,..great links.
