Hi there Anyone have any success growing a tall, showy pampas grass in zone 5b-6? If not....is there a similar tall and showy grass that is zone 5 tolerant???? Please let me know about it....thanks Take care GG
I've tried the Pampas grass, but didn't keep it, and I'm equivalent to zone 7b or 8 I think. I'm also looking for a replacement since I like tall, showy grasses.
I'm in zone 4, we have pampas grass growing here. But when I look in catalogs, it says zones 7-10. I guess the cultavated type isn't as hardy as the wild. Of course, the same is true of blueberry bushes. There is a dwarf pampas grass for sale that is hardy in zone 5. (dwarf as in it grows to 4 or 5 feet) If that is tall enough for your needs, look for Cortaderia selloana 'Pumila' Otherwise in the 5 to 6 foot range (zones 5-9) is Karl Foerster Feather reed grass (Calamagrostis acutiflora 'Karl Foerster'). I think that is pretty.
What's the name of your rather attractive black companion gardeningguy? The perfect pose in a beautiful garden. :-D
I'd love to see more of that dog, AND the borders too. They look delightful. Thanks for the grass info, I've never found that kind of grass in the nurseries here. Wonder why?
Wonderful show, thank you for posting! Was that you by the waterfall? And the little princess by the water is your daughter I presume. The bird photos were lovely, I especially liked the bald eagle ones. The terns are one of my favourite sea birds, they're so elegant.
Yes...that was me and "my girl" by the waterfall. It is 5 minutes from my house. I have 250 acres here and waterfront on the ocean. Thank you for your kind comments Take care GG
BAD GUY BAD GUY BB you already know we're jealous of your camera. Since we don't have anything scenic like that here. If you find some I want some pink Pampas grass Thanks Dude
We are on the edge of Zones 6 and 7 and Pampas Grass is not always hardy here. It will do nicely for a few years and then a bad (or regular) winter will come along and kill it completely.
Well I planted my pink pampas grasses this year and they're flowering the first year in and it should be the second but I have more of a delight with the showing, they're coming out pink and cream.
