Our old fashioned climbing rose is doing particularly well this year. Unfortunately I don't know the variety as we inherited it when we moved here 17 years ago. I don't know much about pruning roses so I'm afraid I am a bit of a 'hacker'. I pruned it hard last autumn and it appears I did the right thing Old fashioned rose ( photo / image / picture from Gardengirl's Garden ) Old fashioned rose ( photo / image / picture from Gardengirl's Garden )
You certainly did do the right thing as that bush is a real beauty and has so many blooms. I love old fashioned roses as most of them have a wonderful scent that fills the garden.
Wow! What a happy rose! I guess "hacking" it was the perfect approach. How far down did you prune? The bloom is really pretty. I love climbing roses.
I took it about 2/3rds down, leaving approximately 3/4ft daisybeans. I couldn't believe how much it grew this spring I was even more drastic with another of my climing roses which hasn't produced any blooms yet but is growing well.
What a lovely thing that is, Gg. I am no rose expert, but I believe in pruning roses lightly for 3 years then on the 4th year prune it hard back. When I see your pics, I don't think that anyone would disagree that you did a very good job there. The rose is performing supurbly and the blooms are luscious to see. Well done, you.
