Y'know, I thought not having young children any longer would ensure unbroken sleep. Wrong. Jazz wakes me up at 3.00 a.m. whining. Why? Because Tango wouldn't let her in the dog bed. You are freaking kidding me! Me: "Let your sister in the bed dammit!" He just stares at me so shove him over, so then he looks at me hatefully. Me to Jazz: "Get in!" She's prancing around nervously, refusing to step in. I shove her in. Tango growls at her. Me to Tango: "Don't you dare growl at your sister!" Meanwhile Jazz has jumped back out nervously, hearing the growl. Me to Jazz: "Get IN there!" while unceremoniously dumping her back in bed. Me to Tango: "You growl at her again, and I'll withhold all your treats for a week!" Tango gives me a look that says "You are the worst person ever!" while Jazz is turning round and round in the never-ending circles she has to do before then taking 5 minutes to burrow under the snuggle blanket, and the entire time Tango is looking back and forth between us both hatefully, waiting for Jazz to settle down. Finally she does. I go back to bed. Now I'm wide awake. Thanks a lot you ridiculous dogs! Don't ever get chihuahuas.
Well, no Chihuahuas here, but the two fluffball cats can sometimes create some drama during the night. They don't really like each other that much, and when it gets cold, they both would like a spot at the foot of the bed to keep cozy. It's a race to see who can claim the spot first, and then the shifting and changing places that occur while I am trying to sleep. They only get on my side of the bed, they know Bob will shove them off right away. I wish they would be nice to one another, and could realize how cozy and warm they could be sleeping next to one another.
Only one cat, who wants to be fed throughout the night. Feliz has found that I will tell her "no" and mean it. My push-over husband, on the other hand, gets up at 3 a.m. and at 6 a.m., and then gets a cold wet nose in his ear at 7 a.m. when a kitty's day needs to start. Between feedings, she cuddles next to me (cuddle in the sense she pushes on me until I move over and give her the warm spot). If she weren't so darned cute and affectionate, we might object to being managed all night!
None of them here. I have Willow and Wisteria, the yorkies who are a delight most of the time. They took much time when we first got them but it was all worth it. Wish I had the grand children around to break my sleep. That would be nice.
I need my sleep so no animals in bed with us or in the bedroom. I think I am the only one that I know of that lets the cat sleep in the laundry room....in fact when the dogs want to go to bed at 9 PM after they eat a couple slices of banana, the cat meows at my husband to walk with her in the laundry room and give her a back rub and put her to bed...it is just like these spoiled babys can tell time.... I hope you are getting enough sleep Ronni and they are not waking you up too much...
My two youngsters Lily and Chilli know better than to wake Mummy when she's asleep but our current foster Hattie thinks nothing of climbing on top of me and POKING me in the face with a paw to wake me! If I try to pretend to still be asleep she will then sit next to me and drool!!!!! So it usually works out easier to give in and give her some food...at which the other two will jump up as if to say ''Oh well, seeing as you're up Mum'' I cannot tell Hattie off though because she's VERY old and has hyperthyroidism (as well as other ailments due to previous neglect) so she's constantly on the scrounge for food Luckily I can dole out their food on automatic and then go back to bed and fall asleep straight away Funnily enough Ronni.....Chihuahuas ARE the breed I quite fancy when I get my dog in 2016 My last dog was a whippet and she went to Rainbow Bridge in August 2008 and since then I've never been in a suitable job to give a dog the time they need....until now! So hopefully next year, once I've saved my pennies up, I can once more have a canine companion beside me.
Gilly, once my kids were grown I was finally able to indulge myself with a dog that *I* wanted to have. We had always had dogs, but up to that point our dogs had been larger, family dogs who would be able to withstand the onslaught of 5 young children. We had several that came and went, but our one enduring family dog, Lucky, was with us for 21 years! BEST DOG EVER!!! Getting my first chihuahua was a treat for ME! I rescued, because that's the only way I will own dogs. And honestly, I didn't intend to get a dog as tiny as my sweet Tango. I wanted a somewhat an animal a bit more hardy than 3.5 pounds! But, when you rescue, when that "click," that instant bond happens....well, that's just that. When I rescued Jazz two years later, I hadn't at all intended to get a puppy. I was looking for an adult dog. But I discovered this tiny, sick, frail little thing who was going to be euthanized simply because her owner didn't want to pay a pet deposit, and that was also that! I knew I could find her a home, so I decided to foster her and get her well and then place her. My vet said if the owner had just waited a week, poor little Jazz would have been dead anyway. Anyway, fast forward and she's also a tiny little thing, and once again not the size that I was going for, but after nursing her back to health I just fell in love and so now I have two little dogs whose combined weight isn't even the size of the dog I had INTENDED to find, but I love them anyway.
My dogs usually get up about 7....when it is darker in the morning they sleep later. Many times I have gone in at 8:30 a.m. to get them up and going for the day. Only if they are sick or if they need to go outdoors during the night do they wake us up. I consider myself very lucky....
I guess I'm really lucky. Our little girl rarely wants to sleep with us and if she does she doesn't want to cuddle she goes to the foot of the bed. We have a doggy door so she comes and goes at will. However, when we are sitting in the living room she insists that she will be on someone's lap and constantly petted.
Aw, thanks. They're ridiculous little things, but I love them. It's a good thing they're so damn cute....they woke me up AGAIN last night at 2.00 a.m. with Jazz wussing out and whimpering because Tango was growling at her when she tried to burrow under the dog blanket with him. I swear, it's like having little kids all over again!!
Pianolady, what an interesting breed mix! I'm curious, does he have that distinctive Basenji "bark?" They're also notoriously difficult to train....I think they're #2 on the "least trainable dog" list. Any difficulties there?
We haven't had any training issues, and we got him around 6 months old. He was already house and cage trained when we got him though. Our son got a Basenji that had behavior issues and he was able to retrain him, but it did take some work. Now he's a precious dog. Both do all the standard commands and tricks like jumping through hoops, spinning, etc. They've been very trainable for us, but neither were purebreeds. Our dog will vocalize an awful lot, but will also bark like a Chihuahua, but not often.
