Planted a papaya tree last June and have been enjoying the bounty. Love cooking them green while waiting for them to ripen.
Here is a photo of when I bought it in June 2014. Fruit by Sept. 2014 This the papaya tree on Sept 2014. This is the papaya tree in Dec 2014 loaded with fruit weighing five pounds. Do eat them green cooked like squash with roasted chicken or stir fried vegetables.
I had one in a container, and it grew fast, but never produced. Then ol' man winter killed it. It really must like it there for it to bear so much so fast. Now I'm hungry for a papaya!
Hi Sueanne and welcome to GardenStew from Scotland. I would never be able to grow a tree like that here so I'm a little envious of yours. The only way I can get a hold of Papaya is to buy them at the supermarket.
Amazing to be able to get so much produce so quickly. Will it continue to produce such an abundance? Does that variety get larger as a plant/tree?
live in Central Florida so it does get cold at times. Wrapped my tree before our last cold night of 28*. Unwrapped it today and everything looks great. The papayas grew larger and new branches are forming where last years were at the bottom of the tree.
