Hey David,

I am a studying industrial design at the University of Houston and the project is regarding human centered design. I have to design for a specific user doing a specific task and I decided to tackle gardening. I am still learning a lot about general gardening and mostly I have been looking at trends from the past five years of what people are planting. I will also be researching the tools needed for every part of the process as well as things that may be used to enhance the experience or encourage more people to garden.

And also thank you everyone for the warm welcomes.

Mostly veggies, and I want to focus on making gardening easier for those who cant garden for any reason.

Hi Arturo, thanks for satisfying my curiosity about why you are here. I couldn't put together a reason in my head why someone in a horticultural or other botanical field would use a forum, so I was interested in what other discipline would find one helpful.

I'm interested in what trends you have observed. I'm in Brisbane, Australia where about ten years ago there was a drought period and a shift towards water-wise plants which inspired a lot of gardens with Agave and Yucca species, for example. Then we had plenty of rain, even floods. That led to people forgetting that our biome is drought-prone and planting natives, inspired more by growing knowledge of responsibility towards our local ecology.

In the future I see a shift towards responsible though liberal gardening, planting heavily cultivated natives while assessing exotics more according to their suitability to feed native fauna and not be invasive. I hope I'm right because it's a direction that shows lessening ignorance, though I would personally prefer native species without the cultivars or exotics. The former restrict breeding and propogation by individual gardeners while the latter displace our beautiful native species even when not invasive.

 

Hello and welcome from Idaho. I have been investigating different types of raised bed vegetable gardens lately and trying to find which ones are affordable. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.
