We have a Plants Database (click on the word Plants under the GardenStew banner) Any plants that you have in your garden, you can add growing information for or photos and that makes you a Plants Contributor.
I have contributed to the database. I don't know how much but i think i have my 250 patch and i am not noted as being a plants contributor.
Hi guys, the Plants Contributor title is added after 1000 edits. It was added as an incentive for contributing to the database. A few members already have this title. If you pass the 1000 mark and don't see the title under your name please contact me and I will add it right away.
Wow. 1000 edits? I hope I live that long. Seriously, I did have a look at it, and I will try to contribute.
It really goes faster than you would think. Remember that is not 1000 individual plants, an edit is counted as soon as you update a piece of information e.g. soil type. So maybe you have 20 edits for one plant, 15 for another and so on. It adds up quickly.
Thank you @Frank (for the answer) and @seawitch (for asking the question). I wondered how that worked. And seawitch it really does go quickly and the program is very easy to use. I've been waiting for some of my new plants this year to grow up a little bit so i can do the photos and info at the same time. I find contributing to the plants database is something enjoyable...a feel good activity that functions smoothly. I think now that my head is out of the dirt and i am a "seedling" i will spend more time on the d/b.
Thanks for the kind words about the database Bev. I never designed it as a relaxation tool but it seems for some members it is exactly that
Well, you know most of us are gardeners because we like to grow things and i suppose growing a plant database is not dissimilar to growing squash or flowers or herbs...maybe that's why i find it enjoyable.
Having photos of seedlings and very young plants would be great too, it will give viewers another way to identify a plant without having to wait on it to get big and start blooming. Thanks for the info and photos you have been adding, it's great!
I agree toni. I, for one, appreciate seeing the seedling photos. I have the photos, but i like to show the seedlings and the grown up plant including blooms together...so i am waiting a bit. Because i consistently fail to write the name of the seedling in the photo file, if i wait too long i'll forget which seedling belongs to which grown up. I also appreciate when people take photos of the seeds, so i think i'll start doing that as well, but for sure i will have to put an identity in the seed photo file.
Yep, seed photos would be good too. There are a few plants with the same common name and I think having seed photos would be a big help in clearing up some of that confusion.
