Well, it happened today. I was coming back from letting the ladies out and a gentleman pulled into the barn driveway and told me he wanted to buy "one o' them black turkeys." I told him we didn't have any turkeys. He said it was just him and his wife and they wanted a smaller turkey for Thanksgiving, just about the size of the turkeys we have. I repeated that they were not turkeys, but hens--you know, chickens! He said, "they sure look like turkeys 'cause theys so big." I assured him they had been chickens for seven years, and they weren't about to change now.
Does this look like turkey a to you? Chicken.jpg

I sent the guy down the road to a man who has Guinea hens. They do somewhat resemble a turkey.

City Folk.....I imagine to him, all chickens are white and turkeys are dark with a red thing on their head. And don't tell him what it's called, because a snood is a hairnet that women with long hair used to wear back in the 30's and 40's. that would totally confuse him.

Well now, I'm really sorry to inform you of this, but that picture that you posted? It's not a hen. Or a chicken.

It's a chook. At least in Australia it is. :nerdy:

I'll forgive you this time, but please get it right next time Jane! :p;)

You have to laugh at some folks don't you - even when they try to convince you that you keep turkeys.

But we aren't in Australia, so it's still a chicken. ;)

I'm sure the neighborhood turkeys would laugh their feathers off after hearing that one.

It's funny, but kind of sad, that people are so distant from where the food they eat comes from that they can't even recognize it when they see it 'on the hoof''. I wonder if they had any idea what they would have to do to get a live animal ready to cook? My children do as they helped on the farm, but I doubt if my grandchildren do.

I had a phone call from the guy with the Guineas. He didn't seem to think trying to convince the visitor that Guineas were not turkeys was funny. Some folks have no sense of humor . . . .

I just sat here with my jaw on the floor.
    Astounding stuff, this.

I really liked your posting... but what I liked best was that fast one that you pulled on your neighbour. Dear me...I had to hold my sides, I laughed so hard.

OH Boy! That guy should have been here this afternoon. We had 17 really big Turkey's in our back yard. OH Wait a minute. He may have thought they were vultures! They do have bald heads.
