Thank you waretrop. It wasn't easy getting those shots. I have shear panels on the windows to keep the birdies from smashing into the glass. As I was ever so slightly pulling back one panel, he turned to look right at me. Figured he'd be gone in a flash, but nope he just carried on about his business.
I'm glad he hung around for you to get those excellent shots of him. I hope he found plenty of rodents to satisfy his appetite.
Thanks, and I hope it does catch a few varmints, because it certainly has not got the birder thing down yet. I wonder what the likelihood it's an offspring from this adult I photographed last February?
Birder that you are; What is the possibility of this being a Sharp Shinned? I'm looking at this site that compares the two side by side, and now have doubts on what it is. http://feederwatch.org/learn/tricky-bird-ids/coopers-hawk-and-sharp-shinned-hawk/
Absolutely Kildale. On two occasions I have had a sparrow hawk take a collared dove ground feeding near my seed feeder, and pluck it before making off with the carcass. Very well captured shots Licenter
We have been lucky, and so have the birds at our feeders! We have Coopers and Red-tailed hawks, but they stay out in the pasture area, taking voles and mice. We've never had a bird taken at a feeder, although the hawks swoop around in plain sight. I love the photos y'all are posting--great!
Excellent photos LIcenter! Excellent photos Raddang! And it does seem to be nature in action and survival of the fittest. It always amazes me that the speed a hawk can attain. Wanna talk FAST!
Great shots Radding! The mourning doves don't stand a chance in my yard, but I've never seen the hawks on the ground with their catch. It's always a grab and run. One time a red belly woodpecker, and the hawk crashed into the window I was sitting right next to. Scared the you know what outta me!
