We have been talking about our garden birds in another thread. I have a little personal challenge to capture the birds in my garden In Flight. Do any of you other twitcher snappers try the same approach If so please let us see your examples. I call this one 'Rocket Robin'
Photographing birds in flight is very difficult, so your photo of "rocket robin" is outstanding! We have captured a few birds in flight. The vulture had just landed on a utility pole, the redwings were flocking to a feeder, and the hummingbird was doing what hummers do--hovering and dining.
The camera wasn't quite fast enough to find, focus and fire to get a better picture of this eagle with an seagull, the other shot is a Caspian tern
Lovely shots MG, exactly what I mean. Great shot of the redwings; I have never seen hummingbirds but I am fascinated by them. Here are a couple more......OK so the first one is not a bird, just a squirrel trying to fly.. The second, one of the many 'woodies' that visit...
A PS to my post. Just seen your pics Kildale. I usually use the 'S' setting and select around 1/1500 sec when trying to freeze the action.
All of your photos are absolutely stunning, Kildale and Raddang! Hummingbirds are only in the "new world", so that is why you haven't seen any--they are only in aviaries in zoos in the UK. My husband is the photographer in the family--he has the technical knowledge and patience to get good pictures. I just post his photos and reap the rewards!

These are all such "moving" foto's. It is great to see the non-European birds. That last wood pigeon is really a good one. Jane--that vulture foto is a good one on several levels.

Hey mate--I have some that look like that, just not nearly so nice as yours---yours is a proper silo with protection. Did you make the globe yourself?
Yes Sjoerd, I have a constant battle with squirrels. I made the wire globe over the seed feeder and this one over the fatball feeder. But they got a bit beaten up so I bought a shop job this summer which is claimed to be squirrel proof. So far it is proving to be so except for the 'kits' that can get through the mesh.
Oh my word---that's a good set-up ! I'm glad that I do not have squirrels...the occasional rat is bad enough. I understand that those north american grey squirrels are a serious plague over there...especially in terms of the red squirrel population. I was looking at that upper piccy and see that if the silo was not totally full (like minus a couple of balls) that that starling would not be able to pick at the balls at all. Once again--good set-up there.
