What have you done today in the Garden?

I planted 153 seed potatoes not potato seeds. Harvested what was ready and i finished to weed and mulch. I fed my tomatoes with nettles for the first time this year. Off swimming this afternoon.

 

Nothing aside from watering a few things. This day I was busy ironing for a Polish lady who has celebrated her 100th birthday and still mainly takes care of herself.

 

How good of you, Growingpains! I don't even iron for ourselves.
I harvested basil and made two wine bottles of red wine/basil vinegar. I was going to weed, but after cleaning house my "oomph" died.

Started the day with a farmers market... it is Saturday. took 12 pints of strawberries, 8 bags pf lettuce, 8 loaves of bread and plants and plants. made 100.00 my friend Audrey comes and waters and takes care of customers in exchange for produce and plants for her garden and flowerbed. win/win.
came home and had customers on and off all afternoon all the way to 7:00. after my customers were all gone I ran a pointy hoe through the bean rows after K put fertilizer down, I picked up some ground cover and moved that to a different isle, rototilled a few places, planted up 4 dbl rows of beans, scattered some beneficial insectary blend and it came to the line of too dark to see, so I finally quit.

Carolyn, so what do you do in your spare time? Cotton farmers around here used to say they worked from "can see to cain't see" and it seems you are on the same dawn to dusk schedule.
I pulled the last of the carrots and they are in a dishpan of cool water, waiting to be sorted and bagged. I'll have two small bags of rainbow carrots for friends, a large bag of orange carrots for us, and I'll freeze the rest for soups and stews this winter. We had rain yesterday and some last night, and I nearly drowned among the carrot greenery!

 

Stopped raining long enough to get some ground plowed. So, first garden has been started. I got two rows of peas, beans, carrots, potatoes and one half row of onion in. These rows are 160 feet long. Got rained out so tomorrow I hope to finish putting the seeds in this garden. I did save room to set in the squash plants. I have 24 sets started. Twelve buttercup and twelve butternut. It is still too cool to put them out. Also, the tomatoes will go in here.
Garden number two is still to wet to get the tractor in. Hoping for a few more days of sunny weather to help dry things up. We will plant about 500 seed potato in this one. I have cut way back this year. Didn't plant corn,zucchini or cabbage. We plant lots of potatoes so that we have next years seed and so we can have extra to help out those in need.

 

Chrisle, how good of you to plant extra to help out those in need. We do the same, on a smaller scale than you, with cucumbers, squash, and beans. Fresh veggies are such a treat to those who get cans of vegetables through the food pantry.

 

All of you make me feel like a lazy bones.
I save house cleaning for winter.
My little garden patches seem like "Playtime" by comparison.

 

I stop for a drink of water. I did stay in bed until about 7 this morning as I have had a headache for a couple days. Pretty soon it will be getting dark earlier and earlier. I never used to be so happy about that. now it means I can stop at a reasonable hour. I sure wish as hard and as long as the season is that I could shed the stubborn Winter weight, though.... and keep it off. I eat out of bordom in the Winter.

 

Carolyn, you sure put plenty of effort into every waking hour.

 

I figure I can rest when I get to retirement age. even though I dont believe we will ever be able to actually officially retire before our 70's. since I didn't work away from home while raising the children I have about 20 years to make up.

 

Yesterday I transplanted about 50 lettuces. I planted more bush beans and I put 8 courgettes in place. I then went to my other garden to see how it was going and then the deluge started. I was soaked within seconds. This morning I am going to check out the Tomato house and interplant basil with the tomatoes. Oh yes I planted a load of cucumbers and weeded the peppers and basil. With all this rain, there will be mushrooms up, so we will be spending as much time as possible hunting mushrooms for the next few days.

Also harvested more strawbs and gave plenty of water. It was a bit warm here.
