Better luck with this one C, sorry to hear your other died on you...I lost those two young Cordyline shoots and I thought the ponytails was dead to but as they was tipped in the bin the shoots had took but the ponytails had gone dormant for winter.

The hell strip out front has a decorative fence and plants in it now. Should be out raking up leaves but since not all of them have fallen I plan on waiting a little longer to make it really worth the effort. And anyway I really want to leave the leaves there for the winter and cover them with new mulch next Spring.

toni leaves have fallen bad on our front plus when the wind blows you get them all from down the street, so hopefully the weekend the weather will be more stable to clean them up.

Removed the last of the parsnips. Whoa--we've got too many. We lifted them, let them soak in water whilst we had a tea and, when the soil had softened, we brushed them clean. While we were working a little butterfly came to chat with us as we worked:

A closer look at our visitor ( Vanessa atalanta):

Cleaned the plot up and covered it. Did more flower plot cleaning.

The Sprouts will have to be put down, as the aphids and white flies have ruined them this year.
You can see the sprouts in the background and the green manure in front (Borage).

    It was a lovely day.

sjoerd this picture is totally stunning I just adore it ...you've done well with your crop of parsnips just showed the hubby how big they was :like:
Aphids are a right pain...5 plants I had covered in them early in the summer I removed all 5 and replaced the plants they wreck havoc...with other close plants.

Thanks TONI-- Oh, I am so jealous of you and all your butterflies. We have had noticeably fewer here this summer. The chap featured in the foto looks like he just came out of the chrysalis...That is a bit late, as the winter is breathing down our necks over here now. I am trying to get rid of the rest of the parsnips now that my frozen quota has been reached. There are lots of folks here that do not like them, or do not know them and are therefore sceptical to try. I guess if all else fails, I shall be forced to eat them myself. hahahaha.

Ahhh GAIOW-- Thanks so much. What did your man think of them? Should I post a box full of them to you? :Dchortle.
Well, the only thing about all those aphids are that I had loads of ladybirds in the lottie. They had a feast on those green-flies, but could not even make a dent really.

Sjoerd you did make me laugh this end mate with (GAIOW) :setc_029:
Hubby was shocked at the size of them as you can't buy them like that here, even off markets...no the ladybirds wouldn't hardly touch them :(..i'm happy now knowing the rest of my plants are clear of them including my rose tree.

Hey there. Yeah? I laughed at my own silliness.
You remarked about the size...I can tell you that the size does vary from type to type. We grew two types this year and there was a visible difference in size. Normally all our 'snips are large-ish (diameter-wise), but these were very long this time...reaching down to the water-clay level underground. I think it all had to do with that long, hot and dry summer that we had over here. I think that I could have entered a couple of them in a contest if that sort of thing was done over here.
About blackfly and roses--I used to have probs on my rose with them, but I had the luminous idea to plant a lonicera on the other side of the arch, and let it grow through the rose--the blackfly goes exclusively to the lonicera, and never to the rose....sorted.

nothing much today. miserable and damp close to freeezing out there today. yesterday I worked in the high tunnel most of the day. cutting off tomatoes, trimming up the peppers that are left, stomping mice... I hate those things! they are ruining my peppers. eat right through the pepper flesh for the seeds. ruining the pepper! pulling weeds etc... piling up the debris making compost out of it.

Sjoerd I had to look up lonicera and as soon as I saw it I knew I've seen them before ...marvellous how you can cure one plant by using another.
