I have grown them both ways,, I actually prefer growing them sprawled on the ground ! In our summer heat the large leaves shade them so fewer wind up sunburned ! Trellis is OK if they have afternoon shade here ! Your area may be different !
Like Mart, I've tried trellis cucumbers, and on the ground. I prefer on the ground, but I do spread a good thickness of hay around the little plants, and then let them sprawl as they grow with the hay keeping them off the soil. With the trellis method we got straighter cucumbers, but fewer. On the ground we got some curvature on the fruits, but they still tasted great. It may have something to do with the variety. We plant Straight Eights, an old variety that makes good fresh eating and also can be pickled.
My grandparents planted cucumbers on the ground. They did quite well. Grandfather also planted Straight Eights.
I usually plant the pickling variety but have planted both straight eights and pickling type in same space !
I like this idea. My grandfather plants more than one variety because if one does not grow well at least the others do.
I'm disappointed that it seems they do better on the ground, I want to try growing them on a trellis to save space. I plan on doing alot of vertical gardening to make the most out of my limited space.
@adam.ca I grow them up trellis in a greenhouse, and they do fine. We normally do 1 x plant in 2 pots next to each other growing up the same trellis.
@Kazzawazza the pots don't look too big, and the plant looks amazing! I'm definitely going to try to duplicate your success
@adam.ca if you are using a trellis, remember that the plants just keep growing and with the cucumbers, there's a lot of weight there. We tied the trellis to the greenhouse last year to make sure it didn't fall over.
When i saw this girl's idea, i was like " I NEED ONE!!" i plan on doing one or two like that, they seem very strong.
