What about fertilization guys? Should I need to fertilize them while they are inside? If so what with?
Very diluted. Otherwise you will see mold growing in the surface of the mix and they will stink like fish oil. Some mixes have a starter fertilizer in them but it lasts a very short time. I also use osmocote in my seed mix. It is a time release fertilizer.
OMG - ROLF --- 10 to 15 cm apart - you know what I did last year and thought in the end it was really a waste of space for only a few onions? I planted them out 10-15" apart This certainly clears up that misunderstanding. Still LOL !!
I plant onions about 3 to 4 inches apart ! Then as you pull a few for green spring onions early,, the rest continue to grow for larger size ! Make sure whatever variety you plant are the storage type ! Otherwise small green onions are all you will get and they don`t store !
And what variety is that ? One thing that is good to remember is that when they say "Stores Well" they may mean two or three weeks in your refrigerator ! That is why markets keep the spring onions in the refrigerator case ! I am talking about long term storage ! Those that will last the most of the winter !
That would mean if it grows to maturity ! But you can still pull them when young for green onions and allow the others to mature for long term storage ! If you pull a few for green onions,, just take what you will use in about a week or two ! That is what I do and allow the others to grow !
Hey guys I don't know what to do now. I felt on top of our fridge and it's not warm at all. My new heat mat isn't here yet so I don't know wether to wait to plant them till I get the heat mat or plant them and see what happens. What are your guys opinions?
Sorry it's not arrived yet brian but this link may help about how your onions need the heat. https://www.growveg.co.uk/guides/ten-top-tips-for-growing-onions-from-seed/
@Brian1985 have you got forced air heating? If so, place one part of the tray over a register and let it help warm things a ,ittle. Just make sure you don't cook or dry out mthe seeds. I had to order a new heat mat and am picking it up Wednesday. I tried fixing the broken one but decided I'd had enough of electrical tickles
