Squash can strain the stems. You can however, create a sling for each fruit if you wish although I didn’t. A great way to do this is to use a pair of old tights. Simply tie the tights to the screen, trellis or wires, then gently ease the young fruit into one of the legs. As it grows the fruit will naturally stretch the soft material, offering a handy cup for your fruit. You could also use lengths of cloth or netting – just leave adequate slack in the system for the fruit to swell. Or, train vines up and over archways covered in mesh to ‘catch’ the fruits as they develop, Another way of using tights to support squash can be seen here https://www.countryliving.com/garde...-to/g4203/repurpose-trash-in-garden/?slide=15
That is not like my yellow squash though, as they root. The vining type like that in the pic or my cucumber and all do fine in the air. Really better it they have a flat broad roof. I would say it would be best if they had something of a T like a solar panel, which is what the leaves are anyways. My first designs had the problem of shade on the back side, but I shifted my rows for alignment to the noon summer summer sun and across the back fence use the T shape. Down the rows its shaped like a flat roofed tunnel of cattle panel. One thing is for sure, It sure is nice working in the shade under there on a hot day.
Man those look good! I am starting to get excited. We usually plant from mid March through Easter. Here is a link for images of support ideas for squash and melons
I usually sow early April. I use Garden Focused for my planting times. It also tells me when my last frost is as well. This year it’s not predicted to be until the last week of April.
Maybe everyone would specify what variety of squash ! I grow straight neck summer squash and zuchinni and they are bush plants !
I haven’t decided what types to grow this year. I’m considering Sunstripe cross gold F1 or Atena Polka golden yellow and F1 Ambassador zucchini and a butternut squash.
I want to do something different myself. I won't plant as many of the usual suspects. That will leave room for some risky plantings.
Mart I found a small hole in the plant about 3 inches from the ground. Please tell me this isn’t from a vine borer (picture attached)
