What is going into your fall garden?

my fall garden is going to have some winter squash, spinach, and maybe kohlrabi. Anything new out there? What are you wanting to grow in yours?

 

spinach, radishes, lettuce, peas, and beans.

I'm growing some peas and beans now and will use them fill some empty patches, in a couple of weeks I'll direct sow the other things and hope for the best. I started some lettuce in cups little worried it will bolt but... it's worth a try I guess.
being such a newbie, I'm just trying things and seeing what works and what doesn't, trying to keep the space filled.

 

I plant lettuce all year round. Poly tunnels are perfect for winter growing

I'm leaving the bolted lettuce, hoping we may have lettuce in October. Otherwise, the garden can have a winter rest. That's just what I will be doing! Oh, the Kale keeps on producing, SO!

 

Fall garden will have broccoli, green beans, leaf lettuces, garlic to be harvested in spring, and one row of carrots. We still have carrots from the spring garden, so I'm going light on the carrot thing!

 

Marlin, I did forget hardneck garlic!

 

My squash are up. I have rediscovered my ability to plant something and forget where I put what. Oh well- it does add interest. I have a perfectly good collection of metal plant tags, and guess what? Yep, forget to use them...every fall. But I remember them in the spring? Strange gardening behavior imo.

 

We have harvested the onions potatoes and garlic, & some of the beets. Still have more beets, carrots, kale, tomatoes and leeks in the garden.

I plan on planting garlic soon for next year.

 

Cayuga, will you plant hard neck or soft neck garlic? I set out both last Fall. Both did well. We did harvest the Soft neck earlier than the Hard neck.

 

Hi Growingpains, I have only grown the hardnecks, mainly because I love harvesting the garlic scapes. And also because the cloves tend to be bigger.

What has been your experience?How do you think they compare?

 

So far we're waiting to see how well the soft neck keeps. We decided to use it first, just in case it drys out or goes bad. If I had to choose, hard neck.

 

So how does one soften garlic in the microwave? I can say the failures lingers for days and I hope not weeks!

 

Oh dear Dirt. What ever have you done?

We make an olive oil/garlic mix by crushing the garlic cloves then putting them in a small bowl with olive oil in the microwave for 2-3 minutes. We just keep checking on it until the garlic seems softened & has infused the oil. Great over pasta with some fresh garden parsley.
