I sowed seed directly into the rows but the heat killed most of them. The zucchini and yellow squash came up of course, some radish are up, a few herbs, but mostly it is a dismal showing even with watering. And grass...my lawn should have grass as lush as the garden. Tomorrow I am going to weed.

Just culled my tomato plants to make room for the fall plants, which today have been seeded in potting soil before typing this. Some lettuce, beets and kohlrabi so far, along with garlic cloves. Here's hoping this fall garden is more successful than the first attempt last fall.

I need to just pull my tomato as well. So you are seeding beets? I have sown them and it fails miserably here.

Dirtmechanic, I love dried tomatoes. I'm glad you mentioned a dehydrator.
We dry them in a Convection oven. We also dry red, sweet peppers.

I am going to dry some of these hot peppers. Are the dried tomato not so uniquely tangy flavored that the overpower your senses? Do you spice them in some particular way?

It's my first attempt at it, so I will see how things go. I just ordered a rainbow assortment from Park Seed so those will be for next season. The ones I have done this weekend were Detroit Red variety.

I've been away for a minute now and doing some catching up. Just so happens the week after my last post on 8/24/19, i was involved in a pretty bad hit and run car accident...only by the grace of God and a really great car (chevy impala), that I am here today. Long story short, was waiting for car in front to turn left, speed limit was 55 mph, i saw the truck (like a 4x4) coming at me in my rear view mirror, not slowing down, braced myself and closed my eyes...i knew I was going to die from the impact, then a humongous crash that knocked me into the car in front of me... The driver of the truck fled the scene. No one got the plate number and i have the feeling we may never find the person, but then again, their conscience may bother them enough, that they will have to turn themselves in. Damage to me: no broken bones or concussion. No one could believe it after seeing the car. I do have a bit of whiplash, bruises on my legs, left knee and everywhere the seat belt touched, my back and now my left foot which will be xrayed next week, and the whole mental thing. The car took the brunt of the hit...my baby saved my life. Damage to vehicle: totaled...completely smashed in my trunk and folded the hood. I will be purchasing another Impala so that i can feel safe knowing what I do..truthfully that's the only reason why i am able to get back out there and drive after the accident a rental (2019 Impala) ...its the only car i will drive.

Then the following weekend, Labor Day, we started preparing for Hurricane Dorian and ended up evacuating to Atlanta for a week. So after all of that, it's good to come back and see all of you on here and get some great laughs @Dirtmechanic. I did come back to most of those seedlings gone, as in dead. I put them in our shed and the baby hornworms found their way in the shedddd!!!!!! Have to rush and start over this weekend and start preparing my beds for next year.

By the way, I did start that Garden Journal.

Sorry to hear of your MVA! Glad no tears/breaks/rips were accrued. A few sessions of physical therapy will work wonders to decrease your signs and symptoms, as well as improving your function.

Btw, my very first vehicle was a 1973 Impala... It was a TANK! Steel frame and a chassis that today would be considered a yacht! Lol

So glad you are ok Hummerbum, basically really banged up though. I am a believer in pt too, assuming you can do the exercises. Hope you able to heal quickly and so glad you are still among the living.

The fact that you want to rush to start new seedlings is a statement about your resiliency!!

@hummerbum I am so glad you were in a well engineered vehicle. I was involved in a crash like that and it is a scary moment. In my case I was in the big truck, stopped behind other cars at a stoplight, and a small truck came zipping into me. I saw him coming and mashed the brake. My trailer hitch did in his motor. Thankfully no one was hurt. Glad you are ok!

I took a weedeater to most of the fall garden planting. I would rather start over when the weather breaks for fall. It was 98f today. Next year I will start them inside. What was I thinking? The fall squash is starting to flower but it is even getting beat up by the hot dry sunny weather. Guessing weather patterns ahead is like gambling so who need Loss Vegas?
