Help with Standard Acer plant.

Well i brought a "Jerre Schwartz" standard Acer plant to replace my conifer as it started dying.

My hubby potted it with compost, the bottom and top slightly gravelled with pea gravel and it's been fed for winter and it's outside our porch in the corner with fencing around it but with the low drops in temp the leaves are going dry.

I don't want to move it, so is there any advice for colder weather coming regarding protection to the plant please

No advice on keeping it safe in colder weather but it definitely is a nice looking plant!

 

Your climate appears to be temperate like mine in the winter. Unless you get an extended time below freezing it should be fine up against the house. You can always move it into a sheltered area for a short time like a garage since it will be dormant (as long as it is not heated, just kept from hard freeze). I have several seedlings potted up just like yours only smaller. Guess we will see and hope they do well.

 

Thanks Islandlife, it was £40 reduced to £20 and because i go to the same place regular and speak with the head gardner he let me have it for £15 lol so i dropped on

Jewell thank you for the advice and i read about moving them or covering up but just wanted to make sure, so i purchased two of these this morning and they come tomorrow, as i need one also for my camellia as i can see already the cold drops in weather are affecting the leaves and it as the flower heads on it for next spring.

Are these fleece jackets any good do you know ?...your helps appreciated

 

@Gail-Steman - Whoa!! That $$ was excellent. They cost an arm and a leg here - easily $100. What you got was definitely a terrific bargain!

I've sometimes seen people sinking pots into bails of straw to overwinter. You're about the same climate-wise as me so I'm thinking you really have nothing much to worry about unless you get a really extended a extremely cold cold snap.

 

Thanks Eileen for confirming they're ok, i just adore Acers and i bet you have some nice ones. it's terrible how Scotland really gets the weather bad.
I have 4 small Acers on the back garden only young doing well, i've put a stick in the ground by each one and pull a thin strap around them but lose not to harm the stems because of the winds building up, will they need covering also.

 

Yes it was a bargain i was pleased and it's only this week the leaves started getting affected as they was trying to turn read, yes we have them well over £100 here but those are more established ones.

The reason why i'm concerned is because hubby read we're supposed to be having temps like the best from the east again and they took 7 bottle brushes well established as i loved those as you can see from my picture

 

Eileen thanks for your help never having them before and i hope you don't mind me asking one more question the young ones are still doing well and the leaves...when's the best time to cover them please

I bet they must be beautiful by how you take care of them Eileen, those covers came today and while hubby was out he brought two rolls of fleece besides long and short bamboo sticks, i'm keeping the one cover for when it gets really cold, for the Acer i asked you bout as we doubled wrapped fleece around it to stop wind chill and down the back garden the small Acers was was doubled wrapped and also my Camellia as the damp and cold is affecting the flower buds for next year.
