After certain caterpillars get finished with my Dill plants, I cut the bare stems down and since the roots were not damaged the plant comes back with new growth.
Not really, but I will grow more. Just want them as healthy as possible to get fresh herbs all summer!
I hope some lover of Dill can help me. I know there is a faux/fake Dill. I have heard that it may be inedible. I really need to know how to tell real Dill from the fake Dill. We have lots of one or the other growing. In fact, I pulled a lot out. I too want Dill for the Swallowtail butterflies. I have searched the internet, but have been unable to find the answer. HELP!
Here is a photo of false dill (aka redstem wormwood). It is mildly toxic, and should be kept away from pets. As you can see, it is much more upright than true dill ((Anethum graveolens), which is bushier and develops an umbrella-like head. If you are buying started plants, or seed packets, make sure Anethum is on the tag or packet. Dill is so easily grown, and will re-seed itself and spread. Once you get a dill patch started, you'll be well dilled!
I'm fairly certain this Dill is the real Deal (Dill) it smells exactly like Dill. However, not a single (Nor a married) Swallowtail has come near. Still, it's very pretty.
I just saw this after I posted my dill questions. I am new to growing it, but read where it repels pests in the garden. I grow lots of other herbs and things, so thought I will try the dill too. I am glad I do not have any 300 lb caterpillars here!
AA, we grow Dill/ This year, due to the fact of Fake Dill not being safe for consumption, we will be using a fabric planter. Thereby keeping the Dill contained.
But I think I will put it with my tomatoes. I think that will be far enough away from the black walnut stump. I have one plant, from Bonnie Plants, and some seeds from Ferry Morse, both reputable seed companies.
AA, may I suggest that you google Dill and Faux Dill. Photos may be distinct enough to show the difference. I set my herbs out in a new planter this year, in fact this afternoon. Dill, Basil, Parsley.

What is the point of a fabric planter? I put my dill in a tub near my tomatoes because a blueberry bush had died, and it was available. The seed I will put in several places around my garden.
