Outskirts of Dallas....where? I think I am older than you but I lived in the eastern outskirts of Dallas while in the 2nd-3rd grades. The lady down the road gave out home grown Sweet Potatoes for Trick or Treat and the school was 4 class rooms. lunch room and boy and girl outhouses.
all the numbers seem to point to the idea that older / weaker people are more likely to die and it's no small difference, this should come as no surprise. that's not to say a 70-year-old can't be in better shape than a 30-year-old, but generally speaking, that's not a thing.
Well... I'm 80 at the end of this month and I reckon I'm in better shape than a lot of 30 year olds. But then I've never smoked, never did drugs and don't drink to excess. I had a hip replacement at the age of 69 and was back playing golf in seven weeks. I only needed the one hip doing as I played squash for a club team in the North West Counties Leagues until I was fifty and being left handed, it's the left hip that gets the most wear. Under normal circumstances I play golf three times a week weather permitting, but get enough exercise at the moment doing stuff in the garden as my course is closed except for maintenance. This virus doesn't discriminate and anyone unfortunate to get it can be seriously affected by it. Obviously those with "underlying medical conditions" which mostly come with age, are more susceptible. But there's no hard and fast rule and it's silly to generalise. People considered to be fully fit have died from it. I did the shopping this morning a day earlier this week because of the bank holiday. The "suits" at Tesco have introduced a "one way system," around the store, which is causing chaos at the moment, as many people don't have a list, they get stuff as they think of it. Many who have a list, don't list items in order of the aisles, but as they think of them as they make it. So there's often a bit of "to-ing and fro-ing" as there was today. The in-store pharmacy had a designated queue which went contrary to the flow. You couldn't make it up could you? Sainsbury's queue to get in was about 100 yds long, but only I only had to wait for about ten minutes. But I managed to get everything we needed. Even Amaretti biscuits were back in stock in Tesco. Mind you they could be out of stock at any time of the year. Went into Wilko's and bought three large bags of compost, I'd run out and don't like to be without any. I got some tie wire, also some suet pellets and dried mealworms for the birds. That's it for today. I might later give the outside of the tea-house a wash down and clean the car. I'm presently burning a new CD to play in my car, mind you it's not getting used much at the moment. "Got to keep busy" haven't you?
Toni,, we were mostly at my grandparents 2512 Bruton Rd ! My mother and my aunt had a beauty salon there ! It was a duplex and my grandparents lived in the other half ! It was about a half mile from a place called Five Points where BrutonRd,, Peachtree Road and Sam Houston roads intersected ! I Lived on Orchid which was at a small edition off of Hickory Tree Rd by the old brick yard and Rodeo grounds ! Basically Mesquite but we were all within a small area ! Not exactly, Mesquite nor Balch Springs or Pleasant Grove ! It was a nice area back in the 50`s & 60`s ! Remember Big Town Mall ? I could ride my horse and let him graze in a pasture across the road while I shopped and ride home !
It appears that you and I lived maybe within walking distance of each other for a while, we lived on Lewiston Rd in 1952-1954. Our house was about a block off Scyene Road on Lewiston road between St. Augustine and Masters. My school was on St. Augustine at Scyene.
I run Open Office spread sheets that mirror both my bank account and credit card. After up-dating the credit card sheet, I looked at the one for my bank account and felt sure, I must have missed some cash machine witrhdrawals in the last two weeks, so I went on-line and looked at my account and saw that I hadn't. This self-isolation seems to be saving me quite a bit of money.
Oh yes ,, you were on the south end of Masters Drive,, I have probably ridden my horse very close to your house !! Joe Loven had a riding arena on the north end before you get to Military Parkway ! You were not far from Vel Mars were you ?? Best frozen root beers in the country ! And in big mugs ! I am 70 years old Toni ! But back then not much changed year to year ! Vel Mars was a little drive in a few miles before you hit the loop !! I forget what it was called but it was just Loop 12 as it ran through Pleasant Grove !
I will be 74 at the end of April. Looks like we were both in the area but I might have already moved before you were around the area on horseback. I remember a small store on Scyene road that Mom sent me to once in a while for whatever she needed for a meal and my payment was ice cream float while there. We only lived in that area from about May 1953 to sometime during the summer of 1955 when we moved to Sherman.
Probably so ! I didn`t get that far away from home till I was about 12 or 13 ! Lake June road was about the farthest I got until I was a bit older ! Isn`t it odd that we got to do all that when we were kids and now they can`t get out of the yard safely !
You didn`t get moved to Lawson did you ? For some reason when I was in the 4th or 5th grade bunch of us kids were sent to Lawson School ! It was also 4 rooms but I don`t remember a lunch room ! We just brown bagged lunch ! Darn near froze that winter ! You got sweet potatoes ? I got candied pecans !
No just two years at that one school, I kind of remember it being named I think Scyene Elementary but I guess they could have changed the name,...named it after someone on the school board to honor them. Having a school with 4 class rooms, two outhouses and a separate lunch building is not really an honor tho. But the outhouses were each 4 holers so I guess that was more high class than the ones further outside the city limits. The lunch room was a separate building, we all took our lunch and a dime to buy a bottle of milk. About those sweet potatoes....I hated them but my parents were thrilled to have them, pretty expensive if/when you could find them at a grocery store.
