I have seen people set up slings to keep the melon from tearing off the vine if the fruit gets too heavy. An old pantyhose works, or anything you can tie up and still allow for the melon to get bigger.

The wood pigeons defeated my attempts to stop them perching on the security fence between the corner of the house and the corner of the garage, with these two strands of wire.

They sit there for ages hoping to get some food from my patent bird feeder that the only the small birds can access, but tend to drop some on the patio.

I found they'd deficated on the wheelie bins again when I went into the garden yesterday morning. The problem is we can't see them or the fence unless you go right up to the French windows. They can be sitting on this fence for quite a while.

But I wasn't going to be defeated. I added more supports and wire yesterday.

Nothing on the bins this morning.

First harvest of peaches (probably about 1/3 of what is on the tree, not counting the pecked up fruit peaches.jpeg the wild birds destroyed).

We don't like the wood pigeons, they make far too much mess and would hog all the food.
    That's our choice.

What you do in your own garden, is your business, why should I mind?

Afford me the courtesy of not telling me what to do in ours.

Awesome yard/garden, Doghouse. My peeve is when the Canada geese fly over and of all the vehicles, they choose my little stationwagon to cover in poop.

Cayuga, do you sell garlic, onions, potatoes?
    WOW, great crop.

Thanks Growing pains. No I don't sell them. I just ordered too many sets this spring/last fall!

We had the edges of hurricane Isaias move through our area last night. We lost power for about 12 hours. Fortunately the food in our freezers is still ok. Today I spend quite a while cleaning up the"sins" of Isaias. Still more to do tomorrow. I've been taking contractor buckets of compost to my com garden plot and today planted green bean seeds & microgreens seeds. A little late for the beans but I had the extra seed. If nothing else, it'll be a good green manure crop.

A few days ago, I "strimmed" (new word for me) under our white rail fence in preparation for painting it. As part of that process, I pulled out the poison ivy first, using rubber gloves. All was good. Well, today I accidently brushed one of the gloves with my hand. And yes, I have poison ivy now. Bummer.

Spector, thanks for the suggestion! I happen to have a box of clothes my granddaughter has outgrown, but we haven't made it to the second hand store to donate. I think there might be a pair of leggings I could use. What a great idea! Those peaches look great, I wish I had enough area to have a fruit tree. The people who had this house, I'm assuming first, (since it's so big) put in a Russian Olive tree. I can't stand that thing. In the fall the leaves are everywhere!

Hey Doghouse my little irritant(s) are bunnies. Once you see where they poop, you can't ever unsee it! Ant I think they're digging up my carrots, now. I was pulling some for my son the other day; and he asked why there was on in the grass. It didn't have teeth lines, it had teeth holes! So it isn't the same thing digging up my potatoes.

I just pulled the last of my carrots (which I grow in containers, because they are for me and not for the ground squirrels). I buy a variety that doesn't grow super long, so they work well in containers. I need to get busy and plant a few more, as my succession planting intentions fell short and left me in a carrot hole!

It was the weekly shop this morning so didn't have time to get into the garden until this afternoon.

Had a friend over and we built an awesome 4x4 foot raised bed. I transplanted two cukes and an eggplant in there, and row of onions. I will probably put a row of carrots in tomorrow.
