To keep the kitchen heat to a minimum, it will be chili-dogs and left over salad. Last night was chief salad. Anything to not start up the oven.
We kept the kitchen comfy and cool tonight by going to our favorite diner for dinner. Breakfast for me (I love breakfast anytime of the day) and fried liver (no onions or gravy) just beans and A-1 sauce for hubby. (he also ate some of the fries I had with my breakfast...I would rather have fries than hashbrowns.
Toni,, liver with no onions ? Thats a crime around here ! I cant even find good fresh pork liver ! I love smothered liver and onions !
The weather has gone a bit cooler today, so it will be a leek curry with own veg and spud bits. Take a gander at this joekel of a leek that we harvested. The Bride suggested that we show it on her forearm for scale.
How do you keep your leeks so clean? We love leeks, and could grow them, but getting the sand out is almost impossible. Any tips greatly appreciated!
Well Jane, I bury them just like I do the spuds and then let tyhe trenches fill naturally when its rainy, but I run my hand plough through them a few times to earth them up. I do this carefully though. place cardboard kitchen paper towel tubes around them. This keeps them clean, but the more important reason is to make the white bit longer. I really need some PVC tubes for this purpose as the paper towel tubes can get soft with rain.
Wellllll, when you are allergic to onions as hubby and I both are you have to commit that crime so you do not have to feel the pain,. we both used to wonder why we had so much pain and discomfort after eating them until the internet came along and he found several articles written about it. So onions are no longer in our life....except for the ones I buy, plant and let bolt out in the garden and get some pretty plants out of them

Well,, on that case its forgiven ! Of course you can still smother them just leaving the onions out and have the sauce or gravy ! Serve with some form of mashed potatoes for my taste ! Good country food ! Lord I am getting hungry !
SJ I forgot about the paper towel tube trick this year! Damnation! It's probably too late to try to stuff them I'm now. But your leek looks positively beautiful!!!! Mart e have a friend who had the same problem with onions & onion family veggies.
JANE-- Glad you found my tips helpful. You can reinforce the tubes with plastic shipping tape to help keep them together when it rains...or get PVC tubes. I keep meaning to get some and cut them into lengths. The tube diameter is good , soi it is just a case of sussing out lengths of plastic tubing with the good diameter. Good luck with them next year. CAYU-- Now don't you go and have a hissy-fit. Ach, it may be a bit too late; but heck, why not try it. Next year you can start saving the tubes early and give it a proper try then. The only thing that you will loose would be the paper tube. When getting the foliage into the tube, just grasp the green from the bottom, sort of like you were going to wring a chook's neck. Slide your hand upwards keeping a stiff hold and you will see that the foliage comes together. Slip that tube over the points and then; keeping your hand snug around the foliage, slide the hand and the tube together downwards to and just below the soil line. It just takes a jiffy. Thanks for the compliment on the leek. It was such a beauty. I talked myself into believing that it tasted better than usual. hahaha.
