Common names for cactus? At least the first and last are. The rat tail cactus is my name for it since it was not what it said it was. I’ve had the mouse tail cactus for a number of years. It is persnickety as cactus go coming from a rainforest environment. The rat tail has been even more temperamental and only two starts actually started. I’ve had the little gem for over a year and you can see how small the original plant is. Dog tail is the newest arrival. Had to rescue it from the sale rack at Walmart. It’s broken pieces are being started as a new plant(s). Any one else into rescuing plants from sale racks? Or start plants they don’t really want or need? mouse tail rat tail dog tail all three together for size comparison
Only the dog tail cactus needs care when replanting. The others are harmless. I have a nasty guy though with long spikes that drives me crazy trying to take cuttings and create starts, (not pictured here) but most of my cactus are easy to get along with.
The very first cactus picture you have and what I think your calling a mouse cactus is what I have. I have been searching everywhere trying to figure out what kind of cactus it is. But No one seems to even have a pic of one. Until now! My mom dropped it off with me about 2 years ago after getting it from some kind of plant fair. But there was no name. And it doesn't seem to do anything, just long and thin. And you said it is harmless. Mine definitely is not harmless. I cant figure out how to repot it or clean up near it. Honestly, I'm not a big cactus fan and I think this one is one of the even less good looking ones than the others. But its still a plant and from my Mom so I want to take care of it. Do you have any idea what the actual name is of this cactus?
The two smaller cactus are both in the rhipsalis family. Look on eBay and Etsy to see if you can find a match and scientific name.
