Stamppot is mashed potato’s with a veg mixed through. The most typical here is kale stamppot. We also do endive, spinach, cabbage (sauerkraut) and onion and carrots. The one with carrots is then called hutspot. These dishes are usually served with a sausage like bratwurst and fatty bacon bits, for instance. Here in WF we use the word, stimstam. Is it all clear as mud, or clear as stamppot I should say?
Ah! That sounds delicious! I love mashed potatoes & I never thought of adding veggies to them, other than chives. Do you suggest adding veggies as chunks (as in carrots) or mashing them up too? Speaking of clear as mud, I have a Spanish tutor from Central America who used the expression "clear as chocolate". She said it with a smile on her face, full well knowing i would not have heard the expression, but would be able to deduce it!
It was, it was. How we add veg depends upon what it is. If its carrots to make hutspot, then it is small chunks raw, so is endive sometimes. With kale, Swiss chard or spinach, then that gets boiled for a couple of minutes before being stirred through. When we make the potato puree, we almost always use chives. We often eat it with a depression in the mashed taters and fill that with gravy and a meatball...especially with hutspot. We also make hachee to go on top of the spuds, or in the depression. There are so many possibilities. The dutch cuisine is not exotic or really interesting, but for my buds, it is tasty. Funny about that “clear as chocolate”. I can almost remember hearing that in Spain or Mexico in our travels. Not sure though. Thanks for reminding me. My Spanish has melted away to almost nothing now-a-days. I wonder if they would have the exact same expression but with spanish words. Tan clara como el barro, for instance. Oh well, I have to let the spanish go, sadly. My old bijenvader can speak spanish, and we sometimes exchange a couple of words sometimes.
Well tonight its fish and hush puppies and Caddo relish (green tomato pickles) since I made some yesterday ! With my Irish background we mix mashed potatoes and cooked cabbage ! Good stuff !
A man and his tenderloin. Winter squash, steamed northeastern broccoli and a salad gets my Tuesday ready for Wednesday if you know what I mean.
I love hearing about what everyone is cooking and eating! Mart, yes indeed the mashed potatoes and cabbage does sound Irish! I bet it is good. As does the fish and high puppy. Ah Dirt, tenderloins! They look great! Winter squash & broccoli are perfect accompaniments. Equally balanced if you know what I mean.
Beef ‘n rocks. What does that mean ? Beef in gravy with spud chunks stirred-through. We call this, hachee.
Last time we had parsnip fries, chicken roulade and Swiss chard. Tonight, the chilli is prutteling for another hour yet. It is great to use ingredients from one’s own garden. The Bride used the last of the sambal oelek tonight. Eek—a national emergency!
Definitely a national emergency!!! I don't suppose you can substitute sriracha the next time you need something hot-garlicy-etc? And yes, our own veggies from the garden are very special. I've never had parsnip fries... Are they good? Do they come out crispy? We are planning our shopping list for Thanksgiving. Even though there will be only three of us this year, i am definitely looking forward to it. Looking forward to the cooking together almost more than the dinner itself.
Well Cayu, We have some alternatives that we grew ourselves, but that is insufficiently warm. I do not have any sriracha. I am bashful to say that I do not recognise that. Would you explain it to me please?
Inspired by Odif’s recent cauli harvest...we had this cauli and cheese with our spud chips and german beef paddy.
Lunch is the new recipe for black bean/turkey chili. If we survive that, tonight we are having beef stew served in a bread bowl. I haven't confessed to my dear husband how much turkey is still in the fridge. He might leave home!
Heh heh....confession time is coming, mate. Oh dear. That chilli sounds good. I have never thought about that combination. Tonight we had pulled chicken khorma.and basmati rice.
Sj, Sriracha is a kind of chili hot sauce. Google says it was first made by a Vietnamese guy in California. Sj & MG, your meals look and sound delicious. We had simple hash tonight:. spam ( horrors of horrors! My father would turn in his grave) with cubed potato, onions and peas. And a fried egg on top. It was pretty good.
