I am in a few social media gardening groups and some of the questions are too much. Like It's 78 days to last frost can I start tomatoes and peppers....I want to say read the package but I answered nicely but when someone asked can I start something "meow" I had to move on. LOL. Seed sales may be booming but I am afraid there will also be a boom in seedling homicide. LOL
so, the moral of this story is... buy your seeds as early as possible. there may not be any by the time its planting time in your area.
There are so many new gardeners that have no idea how plants work. "Where do I get seeds for dill pickles?" More experienced gardeners have to be patient (gardening teaches patience!) and explain in simple terms what is going on. If that doesn't work, bring on the cannons!
It's the same on a DIY message board. First time posters sometimes ask, "How do I do this?" On occasion I'll find them an appropriate YouTube link that gives good advice and post it. Why can't they look themselves? Some are just too lazy and want someone to do the work for them. Other times when you post detailed advice, they can't be bothered to say thank-you. I guess they've searched several places, found an answer that suits them, so don't bother.
End of February so I can plant a few potatoes ! Early March maybe some lettuce and mustard ect ! Cucumbers will have to wait till its at least T-Shirt weather as well as tomatoes ! May do some squash then as well ! Let me know when you lose the long underwear ! Then its planting time !
Mart, have you heard the old-timers say you don't plant warm weather plants until the mesquite blooms? I have potatoes waiting in the pantry to be chitted and planted. I sincerely hope they don't have to wait much longer!
Well,, with the temps here between upper 40`s and 70`s many here are already getting those early plants in ! Hard to imagine that last week it was -7 degrees ! But thats Texas weather for you ! We do not have mesquite trees here and can`t remember when they bloom ! They are mostly a black land tree ! And rocky soil ! We have sand !
I couldn't agree more Clay. I'm in several garden groups on FB for my area and I can't count the number of times I read the same question! "I bought some seeds for ____. When can I plant them?" READ THE PACKAGE!! It's not just gardeners either. My husband posts items for sale on a buy and sell page. His posts are very detailed, description and price with a photo. I can't count the number of times that people have responded with a question that would have been answered if they had just read the ad!!
I have had a comical day so far but not to do with Gardening, I am having to wear a 24 hour monitor for checking out the ups and downs of my Blood Pressure...so what has happened already today is not really what you wish. I was just attracted by the heading...fits perfectly....and I am still shaking my head... I think I should go and sow some more seeds....
I have a friend who asks the same kind of questions when we go into the Dollar Tree store... "Is this only a dollar?".... yes. (She is normally a very bright person). I did get my potatoes in on Sunday, and more strawberry plants planted. All kinds of things are up and going here in Missouri--daffodils, crocuses, forsythias, etc. I planted a few more blueberry and raspberry bushes in containers. My strawberries are in tubs too. The large (4' x 4' x 3') raised bed that my son built for me has 20 strawberry plants. I thought most had died off on me. Instead they had made babies. So I separated them, and cut off the stolons, and replanted them. I don't know which varieties, because I have planted a number of different varieties in there, some lived and some died. And the stores here all seem to have the exact same variety in any year. I wish I could find the ones with pink flowers that I had one year. (I just thought of looking in a tin where I keep labels and tags from plants I have planted. They were Tristan. I want to try and find some more.) I also added more garden soil (Miracle Grow and Burpee) to that bed. Hopefully, I get more BERRIES this summer. I have lots of seeds to plant, hopefully the weather will cooperate soon. We have had 60s-70s this month, after that severe cold snap last month. It was below zero here in February. We are to get down in the 30s and 20s this week for night time temps. I also got out about 80 or so sets of red onions. I want to try straw bale gardening in some of my beds, and I still do containers, and raised beds. The tame raspberries and blueberries are in containers to protect them from black walnut stumps we are trying to kill off. They come back sometimes. The compost is now in barrels for the same reason. The garden was here before the black walnut trees. One was hidden in some pine trees and has been cut down two or three times; and the other was cut down before I re-did my garden. I guess the squirrels planted them, because I did not.
