The best thing about the summer veggie garden is the tomatoes! Every year I try a few new varieties, and I have found some very good ones, but I'm still always on the hunt for new varieties to try. My new varieties this year are Keloggs Breakfast, Black from Tula, and Brads Atomic Grape. Last year I tried Andrew Raharts Jumbo red, Henderson Winsall, and Paul Robeson. I think the Paul Robeson were probably one of the best tasting tomatoes I have ever tried! They will always have a place in my garden as a fantastic slicer. Amish Paste will always have a spot in my garden as a great canning tomato, but also good for slicing. I currently love sweet millions for cherry tomatoes as they are very prolific and super sweet, but still looking for other cherry tomatoes. I have heard great things about Brads atomic grape. I'm looking for more ideas ... What are YOUR favourite tomato varieties - slicer, canner and cherry?
My favorite cherry is gardener's delight. Slicer is Brandywine but I am growing Abe Lincoln and Black Krim first time so that may change. Never canned but trying Amish Paste this year.
I go for the old heirlooms ! Homestead and Celebrity ! The others do not do well here ! Do not have room for Big Beef or Beefsteak ! Even though they are good they just do not produce like the older ones ! Last year Celebrity made til it froze them out ! Am still eating Caddo Relish and others !
Like Mart, I plant Celebrity for table tomatoes. I also love Romas for canning and making marinara sauce. They have less juice and more meat.
Sweet million is a good desease tollerant variety especially tomato blight that we get here quite a lot and of course a good cropper.
Mmm tomatoes! Our favorite cherry lately has been Sun Gold, very easy to grow and disease resistant. Makes delicious salsas too. For slicing, I love the taste of Celebrity but just can’t get it to take in the garden. Not sure what we’re doing wrong but it’s always a small crop and afflicted plant. Trying Rutgers this year as a basic all around heirloom. I love hearing about other varieties to try as my tomato world has been rather limited so far!
Sweet Ozark Orange... want some seeds? pop me your address. I will see what I have left of seeds and send a few weird ones. IF i have any. I was trying to use up all my seeds stock this year so there may not be much out there. but I have oodles of SOO.
Black Krim is among the best. This year I'm trying Mortgage Lifter again. I have grown it before. Cherokee Purple is similar to Black Krim, but not as large. I will buy less plants this year and plan on snipping the suckers off, rooting them in water and having an abundance of plants.
