What have you done today in the Garden?

Daniel, I know what it is like to lose a hen. Ours are elderly, and going out to the coop every morning and evening we steel ourselves for the worst. Fortunately we haven't lost any hens for quite a while.
No work in the garden today--too much drizzle and two downpours. Perhaps tomorrow I can weed the garlic and cut some parsley.

 

It's really hard to lose a friend Daniel, I lost a wonderful dog from a stroke recently and just don't seem to be able to ''get past it''

Cut out the old canes and tied up the new ones on the 3 loganberry plants, but they grow very long and difficult to tie in. When I planted it I only had one now I've got 3.

 

A neighbor brought over a truckload of Sweetgum leaves. That got me outside. I love the botanical name for Sweetgum: Liquidamber. I forgot a mask as I helped them unload the truck. It was outside so maybe that's OK. Kind of stressful. That was stupid of me.

I used a "Garden Claw" hand tiller to do shallow tilling on one of this year's sweetcorn beds. Then I sowed seeds for a nematocidal mustard to use as green manure. It's used in Eastern Washington in rotation for potatoes, and supposedly does better than fumigants. I'm not aware that I have a nematode problem but I garden pretty intensely so I do about anything I can think of to prevent problems. It may be way too late to plant, but I figure if all of those weed seeds germinate and grow and survive the winter, maybe the mustard can too. If not, then I learned something.



So far my new pH test kit seems to indicate pH about 7. Hard to say.

I took out about 5 pounds of coffee grounds to spread. They will have to wait for another day.

 

Still got some peppers going, not had a hard frost yet.

Don't put the plants in the dishwasher

 

Loggie when I grow my peps, I plant marigolds nearby. The ones that I grew in the greenhouse had the marigolds just cm’s away. I always grow a number of marigolds in the greenhouse and have never had aphids on any plants in there. Just a suggestion.

 

Nice to see those overwintering peppers. I was going to try that this year, but time got away from me.

I think the soap spray sounds good but not the dishwasher LOL.

For 2022, marigolds are high on my list for annual flowers. I will grow a brownish-red french marigold that I save the seeds for every year, a new yellow French one, an African marigold, and a type especially grown to combat insects and nematodes. I hope deer don't eat them. I think they wont. I read that the stinkiest varieties are the most effective against insects, nematodes, deer but some modern types have the stinky bred out of them.

Today I did some apple tree pruning. There are many more to prune.

We had our first snow.
