Yesterday it was sunny and warmish...but windy. I thought that it was time to go and have a looksy and to just enjoy being there. It felt good to have sun on my face. I: wanted to show a piccy my Bride took of my one and only Helleborus. It was a gift last year, so it is quite small. None-the-less, is is a lovely thing. Another thing blooming away was the Galanthus. The Bride cut some off and took them home. They actually looked nice. I have never tried them as a cut flower. We saw that some gardens had had some wind damage, but not a lot. We saw one greenhouse that was totally destroyed and a neighbour man lost the roof of his garden house. Here and there was shredded plastic bits hung up in tree limbs, from who knows how far away. It is too bad that the ground is so wet. You can see places where the water cannot drain away quickly, because the water table has risen dramatically. You can also see that the canals and harbours are over full with water. The pumps across the country are moving the water out of the lower areas and pumping it out into the sea.
Oh oh, we had "galanthus" in the north, also called snowdrops. Loved those flowers. Your bride is quite the photographer! I hope the water drains, that your neighbor can replace the roof of his garden house, and that the greenhouse can be rebuilt. Spring is coming, slowly, but it is coming.
Yes, that's a lovely Helleborus! My, what a beauty. I take snowdrops inside as soon as enough of them bloom, and I put them in a small, green glass vase I inherited from my grandmother. She used to do that, and then we knew spring was just around the corner. This year is weird because the Galanthus are blooming before the Leucojum (snowflakes in English I think). It's usually the other way around. So glad you didn't suffer any damage but I feel sorry for your lottie neighbours who did. I wish you dry weather and lower water table.
We have those Helleborus as well as chocolate coloured ones. I'd take a photograph but they are buried under snow at the moment.
Sjeord lovely hellebore and snow drops. If you leave the flowers on the hellebore it will self seed there and this time next year you should have some seedlings come up but they won't be the same colour. Glad that you didn't get any wind damage.
This is the Chocolate Helleborus I mentioned. It's actually more of a very dark purple than brown but it's a favourite of mine,
That is a lovely and different-looking Helleborus, Eileen. How many do you have at the moment? Do you ever see any type of bee on them? A garden neighbour lady saw a gigantic queen bumblebee in her garden day before yesterday. In our garden the honeybees are all over the purple crocusses. I am going to do just that, Loggie. It doesn’t matter to me if they are not the same.
We get a variety of bees here Sjoerd. Honey bees (our neighbour has hives) bumble and Mason bees as well as solitary bees. The Bumblebees have different coloured back ends, some have orange, some white some yellow. I love watching them in the garden. They all seem to enjoy our crocus and hellebores - when the weather allows.
That's a beauty, @eileen. The colour resembles my H. "Blue Lady", but your petals are narrower and there are more of them. I'll post a photo of her once she blooms.
