What have you done today in the Garden?

Our big freezer is full now, ans there are still things to harvest and we must find a place for.

 

I know how you feel, I've had to leave red and white currants on the bushes because there's no room in the 3 freezers, 2 of the chest freezers are just for fruit and some goes in the stand up in the kitchen.

 

Cleared some of the trimmings that i did yesterday, put some in the compost bins and some in bags by the compost bins.

 

This morning was a harvest morning of Tender Green and Wax bush beans, broccoli, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, cukes and tomatoes. The afternoon was prepping everyone for the pool ( they must all take turns). I use the fresh hot water for sterilizing and pickling, then use it for blanching. I have to be careful to blanch legumes last because of my son's peanut allergy. He is also allergic to legumes which are the same family as peanuts. So all peas and beans are done last to ensure his dinner is safe when he comes to visit.

The gardens are winding down quickly, as quickly as they wound up. Once the bush beans and broccoli have their last hoorah next week, everything will be turned over for winter.

 

We have a tremendous amount of deer and elk . They are usually chased off by the horses. Some sneak in and eat the flower buds off the tops of the lilies and hydrangeas even pop over the fence and run right through the electric fence. This season I started using Plantskyyd. I have so many flowers that I haven’t seen in few years and plenty of hydrangeas to harvest for holiday wreaths. For the first time in quite a few years the hydrangeas are packed full, the strawberry trees, and grapes are loaded.

 

Not doing much in the garden today, it can't make up it's mind if it's going to rain or drizzle. But i did collect some seeds off the Californian poppy and the wild mallow, also picked some wild yarrow out of the grass, found out that it's good for healing wounds.

 

Nothing, I had a rest day. I did however send a box of bulbs/plants/seeds to a friend.

Just more housekeeping.

Mowed the lawn and "vacced," it, the paths and patios. Pruned a few bits off the wisterias.

Then I gave the tea-house a hose down and clean (with car shampoo). I do this every three months or so, mostly to stop it looking scruffy, but covering every bit of the exterior means I'll spot any rot before it becomes a problem. As usual, there was none.






It's now 35 years old and still in perfect condition, although the roofing felt has lost some of its sand, so it looks a bit patchy in places. But it doesn't matter as it's a polymer material and won't deteriorate.
It won't need another coat of paint until next year. It won't need it then, but it, "brings back the shine" as the weather in the winter dulls it a bit.

 

Nothing today it's been raining on and off but now it's cleared.

Today started with reclaiming the flower gardens next to the house. Long story, but the world took them over the last two years. A day of reclamation yesterday. Major pruning and agressively cleaning away from the pathway and stairs. Today was reclaiming the actual gardens. I worked at it for thrity minutes this morning .....until Hubby came out and said "It's a beautiful day!! Let's walk away from chores and go fishing!!"

Fourty minutes later lunch was packed, worms were dug and boat was ready. We were unloading the boat at the boat launch and had a great day. I caught a nice rainbow trout for brunch tomorrow. Came home - buckets, kneeling pad, pails, shovels and weeding tools still laying in the garden. All in place. Like a time warp happened. I guess it doesn't take much to get me to run away from weeding. A bad day fishing is better than a good day weeding???

 

I will do some harvesting, then off to look for shrooms in the forest.

 

Picked some more blackberries, deadheaded the roses and watered the hanging baskets. Had some good rain yesterday so nothing else needed watering.
@Melody Mc. it's nice to get away from things sometimes and a change of scenery.
