What have you done today in the Garden?

I did a bit this afternoon.
I chopped up the dead mimosa, recovered some of the compost from the big tub, spread it along the narrow border and put the root in the green bin.
I then got into next door's trees and pruned a hell of a lot off.
I had then to take the pruners to what I took off and cut it up, so it would all fit in the bin. That took for ever. The bin is now jam packed full

 

Took three more bags of leaves from our apt. Building that the Leaf Crew swept up.

 

I’m just gutted. I did call a arborist to come and fix as best as possible. Your seeing pics after arborist did what he could. His diagnosis on further growth was not good. He will come out again next spring after the tree grows out .
the whole definition of crossing Ng property line is all on line by the power company. It states that thr trimmers must have permission of the property owner to trim trees on private property under line to home.
The us a lot of homeowners up and down the state from California , Oregon to Washington. Many home owners are very upset about tree scalped .
It’s not only 5 trees that have their shape and now they are a vulnerable to storm damage and or uprooting. Not to mention all the shade plants planted below them are all goners. Several shrubs have already died .
There was nothing on this land when I moved her ..I planted over w00 trees and shrubs. Carefully addressed soil, water, and conditions required for growing long term.. no one ever approached them from the power company in 20 years.

 

Gardening today, although indoors... Fungus among us . The mushroom kit so far. I think it's been about a week. It's a pink mushroom, but apparently at the start, they are red.



I think they will reach eating size in a week. I don't know.

 

Fungus is normal in this climate and it’s a huge maintenance problem.

Thank you all for your kind understanding regarding the trees that were illegally scalped on my property. This one goes to small claims court when I get time. They all look so bare and sad this winter. A quarter of an acre in the garden just bare. However…I have ‘High Hopes’ , that they will all come back next spring .

 

Raining on and off, but there was half an hour when it wasn't too heavy and I could get out to feed the birds.

The trees in next door's garden look rather ugly after my pruning yesterday where they overhang our fence. They were reduced in height last year by about ten or more feet, by a firm brought in by our neighbour, but naturally continued to grow, mostly towards our side as the sun is to the left of our garden for most of the day. I'll have fewer catkins and leaves to collect later this year.
But they're out of sight from the French windows.

The incessant rain doesn't leave puddles on the lawn. Of course, it's not good for any wooden structures.

Fortunately, with the overhanging roof, the teahouse veranda floor doesn't get too wet and dries quickly.
The floor is marine plywood tiles, with no end of coats of Dulux mahogany "Woodsheen," or whatever they call it now. It's increased in price over the years to nearly £60 for 2.5ltrs, but worth it. It had another coat last year.





Given that I built it 36 years ago, it's still in perfect condition.







Each year, I have to check the other trees that could overhang the back right-hand corner, to make sure they can't rub on the roofing felt.








The shed now 49 years old is still water-tight and vermin proof.




This afternoon, I may take my secateurs into the garage and sharpen them. I've four. I tend to lose one over the years, buy more, then find them again. Not always, I like different types for different jobs.

 

Riley.. your build is perfect as I see it…it has a lot of skill, and tender loving care added . Along with good maintenance habits over the years your home and garden is one of a kind.

 

Today I finished major pruning on the Horse Chestnut tree. I debated removing the second, low hanging and heading toward horizontal. It was asymmetric, but I was more concerned about safety than aesthetics. The branch might have been climbable by kids, which would be dangerous. It was also a candidate for breaking off, when laden with blossoms or ice, which could also cause splitting into the trunk.

I had already removed as much dead wood as I could. The branch was as high as I can work. I had to hold the chain saw up high to do most of the cutting.

With the lowest branches removed, maintenance will be easier and safer. I also like that the palms are easily seen, and the nandinas.

I think this tree has doubled in height, in the past ten years. It's a majestic tree now.

There is still a lot of cleanup to do. All of the bigger pieces are already cut into sizes that will eventually fit into the woodstove.

 

Mate, that work looks really good. Hard graft, and a top notch result. Chapeau.

 

You've worked well there and i love seeing large tree's when they're a distance from houses and properties.

Update we please when new growth comes to see the beauty.

 

Maintance is key to a well balanced garden. I adore the many varieties of plants , placement of hard scapes an f accent pieces in just the right place.

 

I gave four pairs of secateurs a clean, sharpen and oil.
Threw one pair away as it was unrepairable.
Some secateurs can't be dismantled.
