What have you done today in the Garden?

Nothing today it's been raining.

 

I had no luck yesterday finding a replacement bowl in the garden centre for our second bird bath, but I did spot this pale green plant saucer which I thought would do the job.

(The lawn's looking a bit naff at this end of the garden, but it got a dose of iron sulphate, so it's mostly the moss which has gone black and the grass dark green).



There was a socket for the bowl in the top of the pedestal.






So just a case of making this stub of polypipe and dowel, then sticking it to the base of the saucer.

Job done in fifteen minutes!

 

You just wore me right out DHR. My goodness - you're the home and garden energizer bunny. I really enjoy seeing and reading all you write while my world is frozen solid and white. Helps me with spring fever.

Good news on the drain pipe. That's a problem you don't need a repeat on next winter.

I was wondering about 'arry. I'm sure he found that little heated spot under the juke box. I would.

And you found HEBES!! I'm excited to see how they look in the planters. They are so pretty. I don't blame you for not wanting to pay top dollar for a sub standard tree, and perhaps waste a year limping it along. You have such beautiful gardens - and have an experienced good eye. You'll find what you are looking for I'm sure. Even if they are reluctant, I would hope with your insistance they will refund you. Not very good business to argue about it.

Just a little growing green stuff update. The peppers are doing well and getting their fourth set of true leaves. The artichokes were beginning to blister again from the grow lights ( Thanks @mart for that advice last year ), so they were moved out into the living room window ledge with a gentler spectrum light supplement. The leeks and onions are happy and their trimmings are lovely on salad ( nom nom nom).

It looks like the herbs have germinated...little dots of green are there when I stare at them a really long time.

Thank you Sjoerd. I've learned so much since meeting the Stew Crew. I'm grateful. I'm pretty happy to see these little plants (...multiple times a day....I should wear a pedometer).

 

Of course you check ‘em all day long. They’ll pay you back later.
I wonder how many km’s you do walk in a day.

Did some more weeding.

 

The PNW is in for an Arctic front to lower temps to the 20‘s night and 30’s day. Keep ur fingers crossed this could be a messy clean up… where is that ever ready energy bunny when you need ‘em…

Just a little puttering. The power still isn't on in the wellhouse, so I'm mostly at the in-law house in town (my old house). I did empty water from the well filter, so of it freezes the canister won't burst. Also, for the first time in 12 years, I applied vaseline to the o-ring and threads on the well filter canister. It opens, closes, and seals SO MUCH more easily now ,

I finished filling the first "tree ring barrel" with soil and soil amendments, piled in lasagna style in layers. The additives included sprinkling of biochar (from the brush-pile fire, washed when I put out the fire using lots of water), fig leaf muck(my helper had put them in plastic bags. Fig leaves turn into sludge if you do that. I expect the remains to degrade quickly), crushed eggshells, and garden soil between each layer. The second container needs a bit more, and both will settle by May or June when I plant them.



I also finished removing the first fabric container of questionable soil, with 5 more to go. That soil will go to the bottom of deep holes, where I'm getting garden soil for other uses. Whatever is wrong, I hope the soil bacteria and fungi and other soil life will bioremediate it.

Indoors, I decided to start a new container of Schlumbergera, the salmon pink one, from prunings off the old one.



Some prunings have scars from a prior scale infestation, which I treated by spraying.

I just stick them into potting soil No special treatment. They always seem to grow.

 

Weeding and cleaning up in the borders.

 

Nothing for two days, must be a record!

 

Still weeding and cutting back the perennials.
