On the news in this country i heard that one farmer is cutting back on growing food because the reservoir is still low.
This is true Logan We haven't been growing so much in the past year as we've been busy with other projects but what we did grow last year was a struggle to keep watered and the garlic and onion crops were much smaller from the lack of water. Don't matter how ofter you water things it's never as good as a rain shower. This year we're going back to full scale food production as there might not be much in the shops at this rate. (I'm thinking about starting rumours about a cactus shortage ) So far we've marked out and sprayed off a new vegetable patch, erected a short polytunnel, well, got the hoops up, not got as far as putting the polythene on yet. And started filling several large tubs to grow various crops in. So far we've got about 200 onions, 2 types of beetroot, lettuce, radishes, rainbow chard, spinach beet, 3 types of tomato and liquorice. Just ordered Telegraph peas, winter leeks, winter kale and Calaloo
Cheers Logan We've still got 3 or 4 jars of dried tomatoes left from lockdown year. These need soaking before lobbing in things
To add a bit of red in the salad Logan you could always slice up some peppers and radishes. We'll have to get used to not taking it for granted when it comes to fresh food if things carry on the way they are. We have a few farm shops around here, and have managed to buy some lovely plum tomatoes. You could also make a variety of other salads, using any kind of cold vegetables, and mix in canned tomatoes as well. You'll have to get a bit adventurous, and throw tradition out of the window
Don’t forget ‘Escargo’… yumm! Mix Garlic butter scallions cornbread crumbs bake in low temp over in shell til butter boils. Add crispy garlic bread… then dip garlic bread in butter sauce add the Escargo together it’s very tasty. My kids when lil even liked them and to this day . And I luv turnips any way they are prepared even raw. I think turnips have gotten a bad rap over the years. Sayings like they didn’t fall off a turnip truck.. plz it’s a good veggie , very much like the beet . The two have to reinvent themselves.
Thanks all about your suggestions but i don't use many tomatoes and we have a salad once a week, i was just wandering about everyone else. Zigs it's good that you are going to grow your own a lot more but I've mostly given up with the slugs and snails, but i still grow a few tomatoes. But i do grow a lot of fruit that's expensive in the shops, they're easier to grow and don't need watering. Do have a few problems with birds but we have enough.
Logan, is this the turnip pusher you meant? She doesn't look like a tomato fan to me, just an ordinary British MP.
A large proportion of last year's European harvest of tomatoes, will have been canned and be on shelves in warehouses across the continent, awaiting call-offs.
Do you remember when so much of our shopping was seasonal. This tomato thing is an oddity, as toms are fruit and turnips are root veg. Times past and parsnips had been substituted for pinapple.
