How to get that Sargasso seaweed

Tell me the massive seaweed floating to Florida is going to end up in fertilizer? I see it is very expensive.

 

I would love to get hold of some of that for my lottie. The Bride and I were talking about enormous mass a couple of days ago. I used to harvest seaweed from our coast when the conditions were right.

Our pond develops duck weed for a while, and we take the little wagon behind the lawn tractor and "harvest it". After the first harvest I learned to wear knee high rubber boots! The duck weed is spread on fallow beds and then tilled in. It is rich in nutrients and doesn't invade the beds.

 

Duck weed in my lil pond too, it survives the coldest harshest winters. Bless their lil toes…it’s the harsh hit summers that gets ‘em.

 

So on the one hand there is supposed to be a fertilizer shortage because of the Ukraine - Russia war and here we have a miracle bigger than the USA is wide? You better not say Thank You Lord because you can only put up with but so much omnipotence right?

 

Oh, Dirtmechanic, you make me laugh with your pointed humour. Thank you! Seaweed has been used for fertilizer here for as long as I can remember. There's lots to find after a good storm or really high tide. I read about this floating seaweed blob yesterday after reading this thread. I can't imagine how big it is! I completely understand the despair of those making a living from tourism. I also think you're absolutely right about it being a very natural solution to the fertilizer shortage. And maybe it might help with reducing these big blobs since the common farming fertilizers seem to be one of the reasons these blobs get so huge?

 

Compost is garden gold. I did read that the sargasso sea seaweed might be high in arsenic? Maybe cadmium, too. Don't quote me on that.

I want to believe that anything is a resource if someone is willing to make it happen. Of course, if it takes willingness, work, and money, that's another story.

 

That is alarming to hear. I wonder if my pesky rat would eat that stuff. I won’t quote you on that, but it does make me think. If I had access, I would most certainly check that all the way out.

If Florida can figure out how to clean it up off their beaches they may send it to me by zipline drone. Maybe even just drop it straight into the garden?

Lot’s of unlimited green seaweed and red tide filled with dead fish is expected from the huge algae bloom heading toward the gulf of Fla.
