Got a bit done this afternoon.
    Gave this wisteria its,"winter prune,"

I also thinned out some of the heads as there were too many branches. It looks a bit bare, but it's not, it'll have plenty of blooms but less foliage later in the year.

Tied up the right-hand end of the bamboo, it was flopping towards the tea-house and triggering the security light on the side of the building last night.

The black bamboo behind the pagoda has always been a bit of a disappointment, we've had it for over 15 years and that's as tall as it has got.

By half past two, it was getting dark and starting to rain and all the security lights were coming on if I got near any of them, so I came in.

    Looking good, Riley.

I wonder why the bamboo seems so stunted.

Very glad you had no wind damage to your home or garden like was shown us on the telly.

I hauled 4 wagon loads of arborist chips, and spread them on a garden path.

    IMG_5053.jpeg

There's a little more tidying and other work to do, but it's basically ready for next year. The walking areas are mostly wood chips, and the areas around trees and in the borders are mulched with tree leaves.

I also pounded in some steel posts for tree and blackberry stem support, and for the start of a climbing rose arbor that will mostly be bamboo.

I also cut what I think is the last of the apple scion to be used for grafting in late winter. Those will be kept dormant in the fridge, until needed.

One of the Schlumbergeras looks like it's planning for a second burst of bloom.

I did not get outdoors to work today. I woke up to almost 2" of snow :) and worked indoors all day. It is to be low 40s/20s this week, but I have some ideas for the week. Unless cleaning up the doggy-do counts as garden work?

I went to the store and bought a mark down Christmas cactus.... does that count? 17039104816207596800472414178401.jpg

It's in the bird/plant cage already.

Well, after several weeks of watching a very root bound fern (Asplenium Nidus), birds nest fern, I finally transplanted it and I cant believe how tall it is.
Hope it will be happy with more room to stretch it's toes out, poor thing.

I took five 100 litre bags of leaves that our sweeping crew picked-up here at home to the lottie. I had to tromp them down to get them all in the bins. Fed the birdies.

Great work, Daniel. You keep working to the end of the year don’tcha. Chapeau.

I did use some twist ties to tie that old gate to a few T posts. I hope they hold up.

I went down in my woods to check out an old roll of fence wire. It has been there at least 37 years, probably much longer. It has always bugged me, and I wanted to try and move it and see if it was good enough to reuse. It is rusted through on the bottom, so it will go in the scrap metal which I will give to some friends who collect it for extra cash. There is a lot more out in the woods, maybe I can go collect that also. I would not mind getting all that trash picked up and gone.

I got a few new totes [freebies] for container gardens, so I hauled some more wood chips and set them up. I have them with my potted rose bushes, and will plant some rosemary and lavender and other herbs in them for spring, and perhaps a few flowers also. I have cardboard down to smother the weeds, and will cover that with more wood chips when I get to it. I still have not gotten that 'hole' where my old bedroom used to be cleaned out. But the cold weather is probably the best time to get at such chores. I hope to get a few bags of rock salt later in the week, maybe that will kill off the mimosas and vines and weeds?

    HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! :)

It's cold enough we had flurries. It's only sticking on the ground so no working in the garden.

I guess because of your name I thought you were in Washington State or maybe Canada, but I guess not if you're getting hummingbirds in December! Love the picture! Of course dogs count! I had a dog, a large medium dog and one year a restaurant had a dog Halloween costume party. I found a black snap on bowtie and that was his costume.... But he wasn't spoiled, nope not at all!

My granddaughter and I filled 5 bags this fall. They're waiting until I get the boards to raise my beds to help raise the soil level. But 100, wow!

My granddaughter is spending the night at a friend's house. I will be ironing the 4 patch quilt squares I did for my two granddaughters and finish those quilts up for Christmas next year which means I'll only have 3 more left to do.

Nothing today it's been raining and the ground is too wet to walk on.
So as usual I'm taking down the Christmas decorations, starting with the conservatory.

Rain was promised, so I didn't go to golf. But it strayed dry. So I got into the winter prune of the other four wisterias.

These are the hardest to do. There's one climbing up each of the pergola posts. My wife doen't like me using an extending ladder, so I use this multifunction one, she bought me twenty years ago. It's very heavy and there's six multi-position latches with which to contend. But it's very sturdy.
I reduced the number of "heads." I also gave the pergola a check-over. It's the best part of thirty years old now and still as solid as a rock. If I need to get on the flat roof of the lounge extension, it can easily take my weight, or a couple of people.

    The others were easier.
I call this one, but it's actually three. Blue at each end, white in the middle.

This is supposed to be pink, but it's only just.

A lot of mess to clear up afterwards.

The last big job will be shaping the lolly-pop acer in the front garden. I'll take off six inches to a foot all the way round.
I've a new telescopic pruner I'll be using on this, as it's about 20ft high. I might do it at the week-end if it stays dry.
