What have you done today in the Garden?

I enjoy your excitement, Mel. It gets me going as well. I am ready for the Spring.

 

Awesome moment, when the first seeds go into the seed starting medium! Thank you for your enthusiasm!

The first few Eucalyptus seedlings germinated. I've never grown them before, but must have done something right.

I might bring out onion seeds tomorrow for starting. This year I have two hybrids - Red Carpet (a red onion) and Frontier (a yellow onion). I also have seeds that I saved last fall from heirloom Red Wethersfield.

I've never grown leeks. Maybe I should?

I need to pace myself, and am planning a trip to the home improvement store for paint. So we'll see how it goes.

@Daniel W - leeks are wonderful Daniel And very rewarding - I'm not sure what it is like for you at the grocery, but the cost of leeks here is that of a precious metal. Sjoerd is the leek expert. I've been trying them for many years and only had success the last four or five. The trick for me is starting them crazy early with my onion seeds.

There are many different varieties - and like Sjoerd you mayyyyyy be able to do summer and winter leeks?? I only get one kick at the cat and tend to buy the seeds that are heirloom and more affordable ( and available where I live hahaha) Sjoerd is hooked up with a wonderful grower and can get starts. If I were to buy the starts they would look like tiny blades of grass and cost more than the leeks ( my first many attempts were from starts acquired locally and they did not have enough time to mature).

I have learned that some leeks are kind of bulbous on the end, and others have a longer shank, and some are bigger and perhaps can be a little less tender depending when you eat them. I hope you try them

I bought some leek seeds this year and will be trying them for the first time. I guess maybe I should be trying to start them soon. I took the day off so maybe today is good.
My granddaughter went to a birthday party on Saturday at a trampoline/everything park (Urban Air). I ended up in the ER with her, yesterday....twice! After much questioning by the second doctor she remembered they were playing in the ball pit pushing each other and she accidentally got kicked in the back. But it was 1:30-ish this morning, by the time we made it home, so I just called out for both of us.

We could learn together, Daniel.

I won't be doing much outdoors, it was sleeting and icy when I got up and tended my pets. I fell on the sidewalk coming in. Ouch, but I don't think I broke anything. I am kind of bruised. Buddy helped me get back up. I guess it scared him and Freddy, but they waited until I could get hold of Buddy's collar and get back on my feet. I added more salt to the sidewalk afterward. Buddy is bigger than Freddy, that is why I had him help me up.

Yesterday, it got into the 20s and was sunny. I cut down my two clumps of pampas grass to use for straw for the chickens. The feed store was totally out of straw and hay this week. Thankfully, I have some hay for Horsey; and I have the pampas grass for straw if I need to this time of year. I have been so tempted to dig it up, and put it in pots to sell it, but probably no one would buy it. It is supposed to be in the 30s/40sF and rainy this week, so no idea what I might do later. The chickens are enjoying the pampas grass. (It is an ornamental grass from South America, from their pampas or prairies as we would call them.) The pampas grass will regrow freely come spring. Mine have the tan feathery fronds in fall. It was here when I moved here a long time ago.

 

@Willowisp0801 I would start the leeks soon. I started my onions this weekend and believe leeks are in the same bracket as the onions

Nothing in the garden lately we had storm Isha and tomorrow storm Jocelyn.

 

No idea why they give every single storm a name nowadays. It seems very weird.

Hurricanes I can understand, but not the others.

 

Today I planted onion seeds. There was a hybrid yellow storage onion (Patterson)m a red heirloom variety (Red Wethersfield), the same from seeds I saved last year, if I didn't mix them up with a red shallot (I really don't think so), and a bunching onion.

I also started soaking some colorful hybrid Alstroemeria seeds. Tomorrow, those get planted and started on a warming mat for 3 weeks, then into the fridge for three weeks, then back to the warming mat. We will see if they grow.

The lemon bush Eucalyptus seeds germinated in under a week. I did a web search for seeds for the silvery coin shape leaf type, found them, and ordered them.

 

Storms get named when they are deemed to have the potential to cause 'medium' or 'high' impacts, with wind the primary consideration. In addition to strong winds, impacts from rain and snow are also considered when it comes to naming storms. Naming storms helps to communicate the risks of severe weather – and it works.

 

Daniel, I am very jealous of your planting. I will be happy to begin, but it is weeks away for me.

 

Tidied up the back of the garage so that i can put the compost there, when hubby gets it, might be tomorrow.
