What have you done today in the Garden?

Living on the coast our local news reports daily on the shopping forecast that's relevant to our area.

 

These daffodils are the first thing I planted when we moved here. This is the first year they're finally blooming. And does anyone know what the white flowers are? They're always the first things that bloom in the spring. They've been here since we moved in and now I have a blue one.
Second day we've had gorgeous weather. It was supposed to be overcast for the eclipse, but it was sunny and beautiful.

 

I would do something like that but I'm afraid of getting creeping Charlie starts in good compost. So my granddaughter and I rake them to the curb and the city picks it up for compost crusaders. We put some in the back compost but it fills up rather quickly.

 

We had a mean rooster. My granddaughter had one of those wooden play areas with swings , a slide and a little fort up high. He'd chase her across the yard and she'd run up the slide until I came out and carried her in. He never attacked me, but when he first started getting mean I'd scoop him up and hold his wings and legs until he stopped trying to get me. (It took about 4 or 5 times and he quit even trying). Then when he was calm I'd put him down. Something finally got him we went out one morning to a trail of feathers. I didn't put him in with the hens, he rooster on the porch railings. Weird something would come that close to the house. Especially with dog scent everywhere. We had 2 dogs at the time.

 

Pushkinia also called Russian snowdrops also called striped squill.

 

Today I planted some seeds -


The nasturtiums, outside. The others in seedling six-packs. Also cilantro, indoors too.

Also, I repotted the youngest Schlumgergera. Even the low profile plastic pots fall over too easily as the cacti grow larger, so I'm using heavy ceramic pots now.

I pruned two Sclumbergera, basically removing the past two years of growth. I haven't done that before. I'd like to see a more compact habit than before.

The seedlings and mini-roses got some outdoor sun today.

 

So far, the rooster is back with the hens. I am not going to eat him, or kill him. I am vegetarian (will eat the eggs) and wont eat my pets. He is very difficult to catch for holding, but I can try. I already have a lot of bites and bruises from the other day. He has behaved better since sunday, but likely that is short lived. If the water was closer, I would use the hose on him maybe...

I got two strawberry plants today and planted them. They are Summer breeze snow. I planted seeds for four o'clocks, cosmos, portulacas, thyme, and chives this evening.

 

@Sjoerd - be careful with those winds Sjoerd. You certainly get hammered quite hard there.

 

Why don't you get another rooster?

 

Nothing today it's raining again.

 

Our roosters have protected the hens from varmints.
Im vegetarian too. More of our hens are non-laying retirees, than actual working hens. They have a good life.

 

@Daniel W love nasturtium. After work yesterday did cherry belle and Japanese wasabi radish seed also planted my onion transplants. Next 3 days will cloudy overcast and rainy so they should get off to a good start. With these weather conditions I put my kale, spinach, chard and lettuce seedlings out to get acclimated.

 

Too wet for golf or gardening, even the hedgehog didn't bother to pay us a visit as it's rained on and off for the last twenty-four hours.

I did spray the pot movers in the garage, I'll give them another coat tomorrow.

I'm pleased that the grass seed under this acer palmatum has taken, some of the original grass seems to be thriving too.
Lots of catkins from next door's tree on the lawn, they'll get taken up when I next mow it...if ever.

A town trip yesterday garnered some pea netting, perlite, cal-mag ( new to me) and some slow release organic tomato fertilizer. I have to do other outside chores today ( bring up the woodsplitter from storage and split some pine), and a town trip tomorrow morning - but then hopefully I can start rebuilding the tomato bed in the greenhouse. I started some more small golden cross cabbages to stagger plant for the summer. I washed pots for starting my sweet peas.
