The Good Day All Thread

Good Saturday morning all. Currently 18°C and overcast. We sure could use some rain.
I'm just working on my regular Saturday morning stuff ... laundry, cleaning and dog entertaining. I've lost track of how many times I've chased Thunder around the coffee table lol
He's keeping me in shape, thats for sure!

I'm the gardener/groundskeeper at a local resort that hosts conferences and weddings as well as regular guests. I tend to the gardens but they aren't strictly 'wedding gardens'. Wedding arches with flowers are usually put up by each wedding party and vary depending on taste and location. We don't have a set wedding area, but allow the couples to chose a spot they like, usually the front lawn of the Manor, the waterfront, the beach or the treed carriage lane. I don't have pictures of the wedding setups as I'm not usually around when they happen.

@Netty thank you for the job description. Now I understand all your past and present posts a lot better. Still can’t see any pics of your current work? Just curious don’t have to post pics. It sounds very interesting and the versatility of garden plants trees and shrubs, annuals perennials etc., you care for must be a tremendous responsibility compared to home type gardens.

I've had my coffee, done my food prep, mopped the floor and vacuumed. Working my way up to being able to go work outside. Its going to be another beautiful day!
I'm going to go and cut some corn stalks for decorating today, and maybe do a bit of garden clean up.

Yesterday morning Rufus was out for his "moment" and came running into the house, skittish and anxious, uncomfortable. A lot of strange behavior. I examined him several times and couldn't find anything. With time he settled down. He likes being brushed, so I brushed him. I found a nearly dead yellow jacket.

I left him alone for a while then stayed with him reading. He improved gradually and now he's Rufus again. What a relief.

I came up with a good recipe for flax seed crackers. No flour, just flax seeds, or flax seed meal, water, a tough of salt and herbs. I like those. I did learn that what is sold as flax seed meal, has had the beneficial oils removed, but it's easy to make the meal from flax seeds, using a coffee grinder.

Today might be dog haircut day. Always a challenge for both of us. Afterwards he loves his bath.

Some are new to me, especially some are compact or miniature varieties of my garden standards. Growing dahlias from seeds was a lot of fun, and very colorful, but I will see if I can save the tubers. Next year, no giant dahlias, giant cosmos, giant zinnias. I'm hoping the Maverick pelargoniums will have less clustered, tightly packed leaves (too difficult to water), and be a little more tree-like (but still not big), unlike the zonal x ivy geranium hybrids that are taking over the nurseries. Great bloomers but difficult to water and don't look as much like pelargoniums. The lavenders... well, not at all "needed" but growing them from seeds is and unknown challenge (pelargoniums from seeds too), so I'd like to try.

Im hoping most of these can handle summer dryness and heat.

 

Nice choices there, Daniel. You are going to have beauty and fragrance this coming season. I am so surprised that you have such dryness there. I hope all goes well.

 

Thanks Sjoerd. Hot is "The new normal" although summer here has always been dry. Sort of a Mediterranean climate but more winter chill and rain, I think. I dug up an unwanted rhubarb today - the soil is dry and almost as hard as a brick.

I always thought that Washington State and Oregon were sort of cool moist, generally. Amazing about your hard soil. I have been doing some winterising here and our soil is also dry…down deep as well. I notice it in the plants that are slowly beginning to shut down.

By the way, that is a nice-looking carpet in that second pic. It looks like silk.

 

Good Saturday morning all. Currently 14°C and overcast. Feeling very fall like.
I've been for my dog walk, but Thunder just wasn't into it. Hes an odd fellow, I've never had a dog that didn't love his walks! Oh well, those walks are for me too, so we will keep doing them. We were back to the rink last night, and the season will start full on this Tuesday. That will put us at the rink 6 days a week until April. I need to get through this last month at work, but until then things are going to be very hectic. Today, I have some housework to do and then out to the garden to start clearing out the corn, squash vines, and anything else that is done for the season. Its time to put out my fall decorations too! Never a dull moment.
