Hoi Mel— oh, you are gonna have fun. What must I think of with that Madagascar flavour?

Good Thursday morning all. Currently 5°C and clear. It rained all night, and must have froze over at some point because the porch was icy. Not too bad out now but theres a big ugly cloud heading this way. I'm getting back into my winter routine so that means today is errand and shopping day. We don't need too much so it should be a quick trip.
Have a great day all :)

Good Friday morning all. Currently 4°C and overcast.
Ive been trying to wear out Thunder a little before we leave for DD's skating competition this morning. But he knows something is up and is following her around like velcro. Shes not impressed with the hair he left on her good dress, but thankfully we have a years supply of lint rollers haha
Should be a fun day for us, not so much for Thunder who will spend almost 2 hours in his crate until dad comes home. I'm sure he'll forgive us later.
Have a great day all :)

It's a type of Vanilla bean that is very rich and flavourful. I try to use it all of my cream/whipping based deserts. :)

Today is a recover from town day. We are preparing for a large snow fall this afternoon, so extra firewood was brought down to the house and the wind break to keep snow out of the covered porch was latched. The house smells delicious as Hubby is making pork sweet and sours for dinner tomorrow. I purchased a couple of beef whole outside rounds. They were trimmed, broken down and prepped for the freezer. Some roasts were vacuum packed and some strips cut for beef and broccoli tomorrow also. A small roast was left out for supper tonight.

Canada is in a postal strike right now, so I am very glad that I ordered 99% of my Christmas items in October. I have a few in limbo but that is it. Otherwise it would have been an 6 hour return trip to the small city closest by in winter. It looks like all four of our children and their partners will be home at the same time around Christmas ,which is exciting. We will for sure have two here for Christmas Day.

I'm itching to do my seed orders but have to wait until the strike is over. I wish I had done them sooner, as I'm hoping to give my daughter some specialized seeds for Christmas. It may have to be a picture in a box of what is to come. :)

The home chores are done for the day now, and Hubby and I are going to have lunch and then watch some movies under a quilt with Angus.

Wow your winters are similar to many winters while living in the Colorado mountains. Nice that you are all set for colder weather. Firewood is essential.Your plan to stay ahead of the snowfall comes with many years of experience
Sweet and sour pork is delicious… makes me think to try that with left overs from the rib roast.

Yikes what a time the postal service picked for a walkout. I hope all your packages will arrive on time.
It’s stormy here wind gusts up to 60 mph .Hope we don’t loose power, have prepared all the wood and power backup system for appliances all ready. Then water is another story just use bottles.
Well you know the drill..you have had lots of practice.
    Stay safe and warm…

Happy Sunday, all! We have warmer weather today--supposed to be in the low 80's. I'm baking ginger snaps for Christmas in spring temperatures! Cat is luxuriating on a patio chair, and we may join her after the baking marathon.

Today I set up a "tent" cover for the emergency power generator. If the power lines are down due to ice or snowstorms - happens every year - this will power a heater, fridge, hot plate etc to keep me going for a while. Here it is in the garage.

    IMG_0328.jpeg

Then I took it out doors to test it. They can't be used indoors due to carbon monoxide hazard. Hence the protective tent for snow and rain. It has a power line that plugs into the house, outdoors, feeding a few important circuits.

It took me about ten tries to get it started. Then it ran fine. I think I need to bleed the air out of the line from the propane tank, which gets hooked up each time it's used. So at first, it gets air instead of propane. I'll try that, next time.

On a different topic, I repaired the henhouse light so their ovaries will be stimulated into making eggs during the winter. I also found their newest hiding place, in the bamboo grove. I don't know why they try to stay there at night in the rain. I'm concerned it well be a sequel to a famous movie, "Hidden Chicken Hungry Raccoon. They are easy for me to catch and move to their house, as long as I can find them. The white Leghorn hen is looking very droopy. She quit laying eggs a few months ago. My experience with white Leghorns is, they are prolific producers, then enjoy only a brief retirement. Tomorrow might be a hen funeral in the rain.

@Daniel we have the same system set up for power outages. We don’t have natural gas heating just oil furnace and a gas generator seemed like the best effective option.

Happy Friday to you all! We are recovering from "the best Thanksgiving ever" according to my husband. The National Dog Show was televised and we watched it. I was rooting for either the Scottish Wolfhound (you could groom that dog all day and not tell the difference) or the Clumber Hound (you can tell from its name just how adorable it is), but a pug was selected Best in Show. I was choosing from my heart, but the judge chose from his knowledge.
We had a lovely Thanksgiving dinner, cleaned up, and then collapsed in front of the TV. Husband was interested, but I was just glad to sit down!
Now for Christmas planning! Electric candles in the windows, wreath on the door, and I'm checking my list twice for to-do's and to bakes. Love this time of year!

Yesterday was a town day, and there were far too many human beans around for me. We came home tired. There was a heavy snow fall warning for the city and hour from town, so many of the newer folks to the community felt the need to all shop at the same time for groceries. ( I think town received two cm of snow.).
Today is dogfood day for Angus. The lean turkey is cooked and married with the barley. The Banana squash is roasted, the garden spinach is thawed, and now I'm waiting for the last of his veggies to cook. Then everyone goes through the food processor and portioned out. He hasn't left the kitchen all morning. He LOVES his suppers.

I've finished the prep for my daughter's kitchen Christmas present. She has a pepper allergy, so I am making her safe Antipasto and some pepper free salsa.

I haven't made the salsa before. She can eat cumin and loves cilantro, so I'm adding some extra onion and a bit of celery for texture and flavour contrast. I hope it turns out okay. She really misses salsa and chips.

Tomorrow will be cooking and canning day.

Once the wind calms down Angus and I are off for a walk to the creek. :)

I'm happy to see your generator Daniel. :) Is it easy to move outdoors? That will make life so much safer.

Jane— it sounds like you had a super-great day. I guess you two will take it easy for a while.

Mel— you have had a fun time too, so to see. Phew! What a work though. You two have earned a rest.
