What have you done today in the Garden?

I did get a pile of trash/brush burned today.

And I baked homemade oatmeal bread and a pumpkin pie today. One loaf is for dinner at church Sabbath, and the other is for my son to take with him in his truck. I will bake a batch of raisin bread tomorrow also. Plus some candied sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, some veggies and perhaps some homemade cranberry sauce. DS will make a turkey and dressing.

Mmmmmm freshly baked bread.....an aroma that's hard to beat. Looks great @AAnightowl .

 

Very frosty out, temperature at -1c.

So probably no work in the garden, but I've chores to do. First load of washing is on.

 

I popped out to the lottie ti see what sort of damage the big storm levelled. There was no damage to our allotment. Thank goodness.

I swept up an enormous amt. of Wisteria leaves…but there are lots more to come.
I cleaned outside the fence.
I brought three bin-liners full of leaves from home to dump into the compost containers.

There was so much sun and gentle wind that it was a vebry enjoyable day.

 

Fall keeps you busy?

Do the wisteria leaves join all the others in the compost containers?

 

Today in the garden -

I hauled five wagons of tree leaves and spread them as mulch in cleaned-up areas of the border. Next Spring I may cover them with tidier-looking and longer lasting arborist chips. Until then, each square foot of leaves is a square foot that wont have weed sprouts this winter and Spring.

I transplanted another daylily that was not where I wanted it to be. That is also well mulched with tree leaves, now.

I removed some weed barrier from where it's no longer needed, and moved it to a spot where it will serve a purpose, Later, it will also be covered with arborist chips.

More raking of weeds and uneven soil, that cleanup is nearing completion.

The chicken yard has lots more tree leaves and bamboo leaves that I can use in the garden. No rain is predicted for tomorrow, so I may collect and spread those.

 

Daniel— Some of those Wisteria made it onto the compost, others made it onto the flower garden mulch.
You are right, there are still jobs to do here in these waining fall days…also this winter.

Man, you have been busy too, I see. It is so enjoyable to read your threads.

 

No garden stuff today. But dinner was good, and visiting with my oldest and his family is good. I have the dough for raisin bread rising in the oven. I think it is time to punch the dough down and make it into loaves. I got to talk to my Mother this evening. Still waiting to hear from other family.

I found this odd piece of metal in my yard yesterday, but no idea what it might be:



any ideas? it is grooved on top also, but hard to show.

 

Could it be a latch to a gate?

 

No idea, but I don't think so.

 

I finished wiring the two acer palmatums. I had plenty of net. I used it to cover my koi pool to protect it from falling leaves in the autumn.



This variety of acer naturally cascades, but the diameter will always increase each year. It's now contained within the brick circle. It's wide mesh net so in April, I will be able to pull through any branches that have new leaves beginning to sprout.

I'm in two minds what to do with the area under this one. Ideally, I could remove the brick circle, it's in a ring concrete and make a wider circle. But there's not enough bricks and I can't get any more. So I'd have to use different ones as it's likely I could find a match. I could just re-turf it (again !). The tree next door has gone so it will get more sun.

I cleared a lot more leaves, mostly rodo's. The remaining few I blew to the back of the borders to rot down.
I then got into the pergola posts.

The plywood caps were starting to rot, so I removed them and gave both a good dose of Cuprinol and let it soak in whilst I did other jobs. i made new caps out of squares of plastic cut from the bottom of a couple of old 1ltr ice cream cartons. I glued them to the tops and then siliconed round the edges.





When I went to the village DIY hardware store yesterday for some wire for the acers, I spotted this 3mtr rug.

It was ideal to replace the old dark brown one we had in front of the French windows.
I like to keep one there, for the occasions we have visitors and they want to see the garden. I never go in and out that way, I always use the front door and go through the door in the fence between the house and the garage.






It's not a bad match for the rug in front of the sofa. It was only £15.





I've still to prune the little acer in the bed next to the back fence.

 

Spent the afternoon shuffling pots around between the greenhouse, large lean- to walled cold frame and low coldframe. They are now in their overwintering positions...I think.
I went round collecting up the potted plants that are hardy and moved them into sheltered positions ....better to be safe than sorry.

Hubs cut the lawns....a tad messy as they were still on the damp side but had to be done before the next rainy spell.

I feel like I'm finally getting there slowly but surely. So long as the major things are done anything left can safely wait . I have another 2 and a half weeks before having my left hip injected again, then we are away for a week for Christmas . That leaves a week to get the house cleaned through ( yet again!! I really don't want my Hubs to have too much to do) before my surgery.

One minute there seems to be loads of time then suddenly.....it's sneaked up on me!!

 

Not doing much in the garden at the moment.

 

It was a little chilly today, overcast but no rain.

One of my goals this winter is to clean out the walkways between raised beds, and get rid of clutter. I made a good start on the first walkway, put down weed barrier and covered that with arborist chips.

I finished moving the pile of leaves from the neighbor, to the border. They covered about fifty square feet of bare ground. I raked the area facing the road. That added to the leaf mulched area. I started with the leaf blower in the chicken yard but the battery ran out of juice. I was too tired and sore to rake by hand, so I stopped to recharge the battery. Maybe tomorrow.

I did some additional cleanup of a vegetable raised bed. It's not too bad, another hour of work should do it.

Indoors, the second batch of pelargonium seeds has started germinating. From what I read, this will be too early. I will figure it put.

If tomorrow is nice, perhaps I will go out for some Thai curry. If there is time, and I have energy, I might cleanup more maple and bamboo leaves from the chicken yard,
