I've been watching that ice storm notice for you Netty. Fingers crossed they are over preparing people for the worst.

We woke an inch of snow. It is melting quickly with the warmer temps ( 1 C now). We've had three days of heavy rain/sleet. The creek is up. The robins and varied thrush have arrived. Just in time for some worms to show up on the driveway.

I have a few day lilies poking their little stubs out around the melting snow, and a patch of daffodils by the house have broken ground. I'm going to spread some blood meal to try and deter the doe and last years twins from finding a green snack.

There's been quite a lot of city travel for appointments and we are glad to be home for ten days before the next trip. So is Angus. :)

Today is a lazy day and some inside chores. We are still travel weary. I'm mending hubby's work jeans and my jacket, setting a bank of grow lights up in a cooler room for the broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage (16 C) , and then hopefully going for a hike along the creek.

Good afternoon still at work morning started sunny and above average warm. Got up to 77. Now the clouds have rolled in and it is gloomy and cooler now. Figures an hour before I punch out.

Not too bad a day. We finally sold the antique bed (mid 1800s) my parents gave me 50 years ago. I would have felt guilty just giving it away. I thought if someone pays $$ for it, that means they'll appreciate it. Now that's done, opening up some space.

I had a CT scan, a year off 13 years of chemotherapy. Nothing there. Oncologist is a bit baffled, said it should have returned within a few months, now thinks possibly my stubbornness drove it away... it's true I can be pretty stubborn, but not as much any more.

There was 'old-guy stuff" in the scan, didn't need it to tell me some of it (I'll spare you the TMI).

I found out the library has an app that lets me read magazines and newspapers. I'm chuffed about that. It's too far away to drive, but now I can read them on my ipad. Having more to read, decreases my doom-scrolling.

We decided to upgrade the house heating system. The bedrooms have been on space heaters, and the kitchen doesn't even have that. It will mean dealing with contractor for a week or two while that's happening. The entire house will be more confortable in the winter. Last years upgrades helped a lot, but there are times I feel my age.

That's about all for this neck of the woods today.

Thats brilliant news @Daniel W , so pleased for you. :smt026

Sounds like you'll be nice and cosy next Winter too.:like:

I use my Library App. for magazines and news papers as well it's so much easier than going into town but the big plus for me is less paper waste.:smt041

    Enjoy your Sunday.:)

That's good news on the scan Daniel. Wonderful news actually. Those scans are so detailed they always find other things...and then tell us not to worry. :)

We had some duct work and a furnace installed in the main part of the house about 8 years ago. ( propane is the only option for us besides wood) It is LOVELY. With the cost of propane we don't use it often, but when we do I sure love it. "Warms me bones in a minute". (arghhhhhh).

I've postponed our propane delivery for a few weeks, so we are being propane frugal with the furnace and hot water until then. The gov is removing our carbon tax on fuel so I'm excited to see the 12.8% drop in the cost. It's a 500 gallon tank that gets filled twice a year, so it really adds up. I'm not so happy about the damage a large propane truck is going to do to our thawing driveway, but I guess that is what the tractor and gravel pile are for.

I like your idea of accessing magazines on line instead of "doom scrolling". I sure need that. I checked and our library system does that now too. :) I thought it was only books. Great idea my friend.

Angus and I had a long walk along the creek this morning. He likes to sniff all of the wildlife sniffs and register all visitors from the night. I'm waiting for my fingers to warm up and then go for a longer solo hike a little later in the morning ( once the fire is settled and the woodstove can be shut down).

Today is a homecare/housework day. Time to kick out some dust bunnies. I try to wait until we are done running the wood heat, but I can't stand it anymore. The logs love to attract dust more than I like to dust.

    Have a nice Sunday, :)

Good Wednesday y'all! I must admit I am worried about Netty and the ice storm that was predicted for her area. She hasn't posted for a few days, and I miss her morning posts. If the storm took out power, that is bad enough but she was prepared. I hope there was minimal or no damage to her property. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for her, Thunder, and her family.

    Good Thursday morning all.
What a few days it’s been!! Ice storm hit hard after the ice show. Our power went out Saturday night around 11:30. I immediately got the generator going to keep our sump pump going. It was probably one of the scariest nights of my life! The freezing rain just kept accumulating and before long branches started snapping. All night I listened to branches falling, some landing right on hubbys vehicles in the driveway. A tree fell right beside my son’s new truck and he had to cut his way out to move it at 2:30am. Trees were snapping all night and into the afternoon before the temperatures rose enough for the ice to start falling. By the time it was done it looked like a bomb went off every where. The damage is extensive and all the towns have declared state of emergency for hundreds of miles. Now we are onto our 5th day with no power, the restoration time keeps changing. I was able to get into town for more gas for the generator three times so far and will have to go again this morning. Yesterday there was another special weather advisory for another night of freezing rain, thunderstorms and heavy rain. We are just on the other side of that now, and despite the pump running my basement is wet. There is crazy amounts of water everywhere, but I hope no more outages or trees down.I wont know for another hour when it’s light out. Thankfully we have lots of food and firewood. I started cleanup in the yard and assessed the damage to hubbys vehicles which was bad but could have been way worse. Just waiting patiently for the power to return now and will be heading to town to the warmup/charging station for a shower. We can’t leave the house unattended as there are thieves stealing peoples generators in the area, so DD and thunder are on guard duty. I’ll be so glad when this nightmare is over! Thanks MG for missing me

So glad to hear from you, Netty! Sorry to hear about the damage, but that can be taken care of--the important thing is that you and yours are safe, Stealing generators? How low can some people go!
We got an estimate on a new HVAC unit, and were amazed at how reasonable the cost will be. It will be installed next week. The unit being replaced still functions but it doesn't cool as well as it should. We are updating some aged things before the tariffs imposed by lame-brain make anything with a foreign made part exorbitantly expensive. Our new dryer arrives tomorrow!
Hope the weather cooperates for all of you, and that you have a good day!

I just, for the first time, investigated this thread. Sorry about your awful ice storms @Netty. I remember how bad those can be from living in New England as a kid. Hope you can get everything back to normal quickly !!

So I'm sitting outside drinking a few beers. I look at something and say to myself "Ooh, I should measure that". So I go in the house to get my tape measure, but can't find it where its supposed to be. Maybe I left it outside...roam the whole yard...nope. Go back inside, look all over until finally I find it in a box where I have no idea how it wound up there. So, OK...um wait...now I forgot what I was gonna measure. :frustrated: And then, while I was posting this, I forgot I was boiling water and half of it evaporated. Don't get old.

Happens to me all the time !! Oh, I'll just go get "such-and-such" this will only take a minute and I can get right back to what I was doing. Half hour later, after looking everywhere but where "such-and-such" thing is, I can't remember what I was doing before I started looking for it !! :smt044:smt044:smt044

Then I laugh !! Gotta laugh at yourself or you go nuts !! :smt043

Good Saturday morning all. It’s very early, about 4:55am, but I can’t sleep. We are on day 7 with no power here. The power is being restored all around us, but our restoration date keeps changing. It was just changed again, to Sunday at 6pm. I’ve spent $300 in fuel for the generator so far. I’ve been busy doing yard cleanup, and I have piles and piles of branches waiting for the fella with the woodchipper to come chop it up. I also have a pile of firewood to be cut and stacked to dry. I’ve been collecting fallen wood from the roadside as well for next winters burning. We’ve been to the arena where they have a shower/charging/warming station for residents without power. I’ve taught my daughter how to play rummy and we’ve been playing in the evenings. It’s all getting very old, and we are beyond ready to have our power back on. Today we are expecting rain, so that means the sump pump will be running faster so I’ll need to go get more fuel for the generator. Ugh, enough already!!!

Netty', been there, done that. Due to the electric grid's incompetence, all of Texas was without power for several days four years ago. It isn't fun, but after a while you start to pat yourself on the back for having survived it with style and grace.
We are rainy, which has put paid to our outdoor plans. However, the plants are loving it! The temperature has dropped so we had to turn the heat on. Winter lingers on . . . .
Hope you all have a good and "powerful" day!

During Superstorm Sandy in 2012, we were without power for over two weeks. I never got a generator so by the time I thought it prudent to get one they were all gone. People were stealing them from yards. It was the end of October and it was getting very uncomfortable. Finally I saw a truck from a utility company from Chicago, Ill. and I told them "get my power on and I'll promise to root for the Cubs" They got it on. Reverted to something stupid in the meantime, used my gas stove for some heat. But kept CO detectors nearby. Don't try that at home.
