I was strolling through the greenhouse this morning, on the way back from doing the chickens, when something caught my eye. I have a Globe Amaranth that I thought died during the winter with all my heating problems. Low and behold look at these pictures: My hubby thinks this plant is an annual. I didn't want to see this plant die. It is so beautiful and I have not seen one before, around here. Does anyone know about this plant?
I am sure it is an annual, too. What are the little seedlings in the pot? did it reseed itself? Is the stem green at all if you scratch it with your thumbnail?
My flower seems so much larger than the one in our database. And look, my leaves and stems are hairy. Are the leaves and stems hairy in our database? This is my last year bloom. Either way it is a Amaranth. That little seedling isn't a seedling. It's growing off the main stem of the dead plant.
The leaves were hairy, I color corrected the photo and it changed the look of the leaves too and mine were just little guys. They never got a chance to grow up, they died while I was in the hospital last summer.
Barb, In the second picture straight up from the hairy new growth are a couple of seedlings, are they reseeded plants or just ???.
toni, Are they easily found in stores by you? What a shame that you lost yours.. I love them. Hope mine comes back... Carolyn, I didn't see any little seedlings in there but when I go to do the chickens I will look again. I guess I was so excited about this little shoot off the stem I didn't look anywhere else. moderator's note: removed double posting see point 3.6 of usage rules
Your plant has decided that it wants to show you that it can survive despite all the odds. I have some 'annuals' that self seed and come back year after year but haven't,I don't think. ever seen growth on a plant that looked as if it had died. Thank goodness you didn't decide to throw it out.
Carolyn, I didn't have to go out to look. I just enlarged the photo and there they were...little babies. You are right. See them just above the large one on the stem? But that larger thingie is growing on the stem of the dead mommy. Guess she is not all the way dead....
I'll try this again. So these little on the top right corner may be reseeded Amaranth but I would have pulled them as weeds if the big plant was alive. Of course now I will wait. Now clearly this little shoot is growing our of the dead stem. In the end, I think this big plant would have lived had the greenhouse been warmer.
