A very pretty leaf plant from the Mediterranean regions that adds colour to the border the entire season because of the red veins in the green leaves. It does, however, self-seed too well and the flower stems should be removed to keep the plant nice and full. The blooms are not of particular interest. The young leaves are edible and taste like spinach or chard, but gets too tough very quickly.
I have grown it outside without particular shelter for two winters, with temperatures down to -10C or 14F, and I know it grows further north in even colder winters. I like this opinion
I have also grown it outdoors and it lasted several seasons here in zone 5. It did not seem to self seed for me at all.

Be aware that just because a plant is sold in garden centers near you that doesn't mean they will live in your area.
This is one I would NOT recommend for areas where even short term drought is a problem, even with watering almost daily from the rain barrel it just turned brown and has become compost. I like this opinion Note: please don't use this box to post questions, you can do that on our forums instead. |
