Rating for this plant:
USA - S Texas; Mexico - Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, Tamaluipas, 550 m.
Synonymes: Hamatocactus setispinus, Ferocactus setispinus.
Frost Tolerance: Hardy to -7C.
Globose stems.
Encounterability in collections: Common worldwide
Sweet scent yellow flowers with deep red throats.
Photo: note to extrafloral nectary glands on Ferocactus type, young and long areoles locating upper side of the spines.
The northernmost species of the genus, occuring in thorn shrub vegetation and coastal lowlands.
Many varieties have been described, but none recognized. Indeed, the immediate relationship with the genus is unclear, perhaps an ancient intergeneric hybride.
